Default "Phialdelphia Lawyer"

There is a "slang" term of "phialdelphia lawyer"

I had always considered the term a "pejorative" term.. (aka if someone calls you a Phialdelphia Lawyer - slug em)

But this site seems to say otherwise....

http://www.thephiladelphialawyer.net/

Which probably clarifies the British saying that Lawnmummy refers to in this thread:

BUt Im more familiar with the "shyster" definition of the Philadelphia Lawyer...

I like the Maddox Brothers and Rose version of this classic Woody Guthre song:
http://www.cowboylyrics.com/tabs/for...wyer-6153.html

This definition seems to clarify the "dichotomy" of the slang
The term "Philadelphia Lawyer" indicates a deviously clever attorney who can twist anything to his client's favor.

Thus it depends if the Philadelphia Lawyer is YOUR lawyer or not

When I moved here to practice law, I had never heard of the phrase...family told me it was prestigious, meaning a lawyer who is fair and just.

That is what I was told it was meant. I think it means that lawyers in Philly tend to be a cut above the rest, which from what little I know is true. That is with some obvoius exceptions - ambulance chasers and whatnot.

I agree Kaisen. The term, Philadelphia Lawyer" may be pejorative
or not .. depending on which side you are on. If you are the
consumer, however, and pay for the courts through taxes, you
will always lose!

Hey Keiko!

If they call you Philadelphia Law Clerk, I would accuse them of snitchin' ......

PS- Why do you guys keep saying "snitching" when everyone
knows the word is "snitchin' ......."

Joel

PS- I hope you find some humor in this or else Uncle Cranky
will bee (sic) all over me like bees at a picnic.

THat may be what it means IN Philly

Not true. My folks are from NC/SC and down South, it means a proficient, successful lawyer.
