Default Gay Scene in Philadelphia

Allrighty then, it's time for something new.

If I'm the only gay person on this board, then I fear I might have a thread all to myself. Any thoughts on the gay scene here in Philadelphia?

I'll start with my own thoughts. It's fairly lame, as far as the bar scene goes. Personally, I'd rather spend an evening at the Khyber or Fergies than in any of the local gay establishments -except for Tavern on Camac, which can be fun on a weekend night. As a rule, I find the local establishments rather depressing and they all play the worst music on the face of the earth. How about a gay bar that plays rock? We don't all like bad dance music. I also think our very close proximity to New York sucks away a lot of vitality that should rightfully be ours.

I find Philadelphia as a whole rather tolerant and accepting - if you stay near Center City. Also, there are plenty of fantastic people here if you know where to look (and it's generally not going to be at the corner of 13th and Walnut or 12th and Locust.

I live at 12th & Locust. I am not gay.

But I can say that many of the presumed to be gay residents in my building all like that shitty dance music (thump, thump, thump, thump, thump...). It is SO annoying.

As a gay man, can you explain why that sexual preference so often leads to horrible taste in music?

Steve,

I was just thinking there isn't much of a gay voice on the blog. Pcunicelli, HughE2003, PhillyTIM, where are you now? Anyway, I just find it odd because I think this city has a large population of gay people and they're underepresented here. Or it could just be I'm spending too much time in the gayborhood, at 12th Street gym, or unknowingly sitting next to gay internet dates at Liberty Place for lunch.

Subtlety, thy name is not megahurt. Lots of gay men hate bad house music, my brother-in-law included, but begrudgingly acept it as part of the club/bar scene. You might ask the same quesiton of a lot of hetero English men.

Are you saying that I don't accept all the filthy drug addicts out there? That's silly. I accept them for what they are.

Don't you?

I'm not the type to stereotype, and of course I know that not ALL gay men like the same music, etc. I have lived with several gay roomates, and I know the deal.

Having said that, I live in a building with many gay residents. There are no clubs or bars in my apartment building, and still the lame house music. I was just asking.

I've been asking myself this question for years. I remember the first time I ever walked into a gay bar. It was Woody's and the year was 1990 - maybe early 1991. I had never been exposed to "gay" music before and I've gotta tell you, it pounded in my head like a sledgehammer. I sat there for a couple of hours, didn't hear one song I had ever heard before or liked, got hit on by a 50 something history teacher ( I was 23 at the time and liked em my age or younger). I was not a happy little camper when I left the bar that night. "So..this is my future, " I said to myself. Anyway, things have gotten way brighter over the years, but I still have never learned to understand the appeal of that music to so many of my co-orientationists.

Brooke: Yeah, I agree. There don't seem to be any of us on this board. I started this thread in an attempt to maybe fish them out.

If it's a club, they'll play club music - gay or straight. I have to say that all club music stinks!

As for gay bar bars - I've only been to reg bars with gay nights and they played non-club music those nights.

There's a fairly large gay community in Richmond and they have barely anywhere to hang out. A gay club? Pretty much non-existent. A gay bar? Rare and way too few.

There's a gay bar by me, but they're all lesbians in there. With their backs turned it looks like happy hour near a construction site.
