Why do people want to know my job w/in minutes of meeting me? I find it annoying, irrelevent, and intrusive. I can't think of anything I could care less about when meeting someone than what they do for a living. Anyone else want to let out a long sigh when they hear this question?

I know, it's so funny. I've heard that complaint from a lot of New Yorkers, but when someone in NYC asks what you do, he really wants to know how much money you make. Then he'll ask about your rent.

I think that Rpost's reply just shows how limited his horizons are. When someone asks "what do you do", they just mean "tell me about yourself." The best answer to that question I heard went something like "well, by day I'm in xyz, but really I like to paint etc......"

Some people use this site to make friends. I use it to vent, b/c 90% of the people on here make me want to roll my eyes. The other 10% is enough to keep me around, which is lucky for you and everyone else. I don't see how essentially asking someone how much money you make (that's exactly what "what do you do?" is asking) is "touchy-feely" or "trying to get to know someone." Obviously I've pissed off a couple people who like asking that question, so explain it to me: exactly why is it important whether someone is a line cook or a engineer?

Actually, yes. That would be ideal. Why get all "gay-touchy-feely" w/ someone you just met?

::shrug:: if I ask someone that it's usually because I'm interested in them as a person and figure what they do is one facet of who they are.
