Fumo taken to hospital with chest pains
State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo (D., Phila.) was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital tonight after complaining of chest pains, his spokesman Gary Tuma said.
Doctors were still examining Fumo, who arrived at the hospital about 7 p.m., and had not issued a diagnosis.
Fumo, the powerful longtime lawmaker from South Philadelphia, has had two back operations within the last four months. The most recent was late last month, when Fumo, 64, underwent lumbar fusion surgery to correct a misalignment of vertebrae. After the surgery, staff said he was to be "somewhat restricted" in his activities for several weeks.
He also had back surgery in October. Fumo has a history of heart trouble and suffered a heart attack in 1977.
Fumo is in a four-way race for reelection to his First Senatorial District seat. He also faces trial later this year on federal charges that he misused Senate staff and two charities for personal and political gain.
