There are definitely run-down and depressing bits of London. However, what makes them really, really depressing is that you could probably buy a nice 3-bed house in Queen Village for the same price as an ugly 1-bed apartment in some of these neighborhoods.

What you don't see in London too often, or in many other places in the UK (save Newcastle and Liverpool), are derelict buildings and empty lots. There are too many people squashed into too little space in the UK, and every bit of land that can be lived upon is valuable.

Again, the poverty is hidden in (mostly) pretty surroundings, although the Luftwaffe hit Canterbury quite badly, and quite a lot of dismal 1950's "austerity" buildings in the town center.

Ah, Toronto is my favorite North American city. Reminds me of what a cleaned up Philadelphia could be like...

I thought the same thing the first time I saw downtown Toronto, the architecture, the theaters..and the neighborhoods.

Here is the where:

Rochester, NY >> Devon, Pa (philly burb) >> Geneva, NY >> Edinburgh Scotland >> Geneva, NY >> Washington, DC >> Villanova/Bryn Mawr, PA >> Philadelphia, Pa.

Here is the why:

I was born in Rochester, Ny. Moved to Devon b/c my father got a job in Philly. I went to college in Geneva, NY. Spent 6 mos in Edinburgh studying abroad (beautiful city!!), then returned to geneva to finish college. Moved to Wash, DC on a whim (ie no job or place to stay, just knew some people) and got my first *real* job. Moved to 'nova/brynmawr for further post grad schooling. Then moved to Philly proper for my current job.

My next move will likely be to another part of the city. Would love to buy a place, but can't afford to - damn you school loans!!
