Default Forbes Sez We're Tops for Young Professionals

Philadelphia comes in at Number 9,

above Austin, Denver, Portland, Charlotte, St. Louis, Providence, CHICAGO, Raleigh-Durham, Cincinnati, SAN DIEGO, Milwaukee, PITTSBURGH, Nashville, Columbus, New Orleans, HOUSTON, Cleveland, PHOENIX, Sacramento, DALLAS, Miami...

I'm sure the Negadelphians are like "waaaaaaa?" right now.

Methinks that the reason why Philadelphia is bumped up so high is because of all the universities we have and teaching hospitals.

We did score really high on the number of single people living in the city (I think that's because people who get married and have kids leave town).

What do you think? Forbes is a pretty influential mag for corporate druids.

The bottom 10 cities were brought down by a variety of causes. Salary to cost of living submarined Miami, Norfolk, Va., and San Antonio. The inability to attract top grads and top companies hurt Detroit and Las Vegas, and all our measurements converged on Tampa, Fla., beating it down to last place on our list.
I am surprised to see San Antonio and Tampa in the bottom 10 cities.

And why the hell shouldn't we be? Philadelphia has a great deal to offer. But I can see those from Chicago having apoplectic fits right about now!

Nope.

Hey, Philly has GREAT Universities and teaching hospitals. Some of the best in the world. Heck, wifie is learning to be a trauma doctor. She is in west Philly now, can't think of a better place in the US. We came here for a reason.

If you guys could bring in the types of businesses for the professionals to work at, they would stay.

I have always felt Philly has GREAT potential. Ya just gotta use some of it.

One thing I found interesting about their methodology is that, after selecting the six elite universities whose grads they would track across the country 10 years out, they factored out the graduates who hung around those universities' home towns after graduation.

Pardon me, but that strikes me as counterintuitive for the following reason: Most young people who attend those creme de la creme schools have already packed up and moved halfway across the country simply to attend them; most of their high school classmates are probably at State U or a nice little liberal-arts college in their home regions. If they then choose to stay where they moved to attend college, and are doing well there 10 years out, that should be an indicator of attractiveness for young professionals.

That's certainly the assumption the Knowledge Industry Partnership makes in its efforts to encourage grads to stay in Philly after they get their BAs. We already retain a very high share of the locals who attend college here; we don't do that well in retaining those who come from away to study here. The fact that we placed 9th in this survey and 11th in attractiveness for recent grads based on Forbes' methodology may suggest that the people who move here from away after graduation see something here that the grads here do not,* but I still think that the assumption they made in factoring out the hangers-around was off base.

*In fact, I'm sure of it. Disclaimer: The story that follows is anecdotal, and -- everybody together now -- the plural of anecdote is not data. But it can be illustrative nonetheless. I met a couple at the Slow Food fundraiser at Head House Square who had moved here from Connecticut -- after careful consideration of several options for relocation. This (admittedly middle-aged) couple told me that they absolutely loved Philadelphia and the many things it had to offer. They also told me that whenever they told natives that they had moved here by choice, they got looks that suggested they had taken leave of their senses.

I am always highly suspicious of those on this board who talk about how Philly is the worst place in the known universe. Hey, if you hate it, why have you not left?

Old news. I had made a post on this same Forbes article several weeks ago!
That thread is here:

Oh, and just so its clear to HG...yes, I did point out and make a thread about Philly which showed Philly in good light compared to all of Texas... just in case you might wonder what the feck I keep coming here for and not sucking up to everything philly, even if I do see a buttload of Negadelphia-ism. You can see, for example, how I come down on Dallas in that thread.

It was in Center City forum.

Word to Big Bird.

I can definitely see Philly being a hub for young professionals right now. The city is booming in a lot of ways (hopefully, crime will stop booming with new leadership in City Hall) and that's going to attract us to the city. I found jobs to be more plentiful here, with higher salaries and a lower cost of living than many other cities I considered. There's a lot to love about this city, ya know?

my point exactly!

but to some "local yokels" if you weren't born here, you have no right to say anything critical about the city or else you will forever be labeled an outsider. of course, the locals can be as negative about their city as they wanna be and they certainly don't lose many opportunities at that!

I can tell you of Young professional cities, Philadelphia in no sense of imagination is even close to Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Portland, and Nashville in terms of Young Professionals.

Much more talent, activities, and affordability for those cities.
