Default "Scarfo's son nestles in at the shore"

Quote:
Nicodemo S. Scarfo, the son of jailed Philadelphia mob boss Nicodemo D. "Little Nicky" Scarfo, has returned to the Atlantic City area - a move that has raised eyebrows in both law-enforcement and underworld circles.
Although his lawyer says he's simply working for a cement contractor in Atlantic County, some law-enforcement sources believe that the younger Scarfo could be making a move to take control of the crime family that his father ruled through fear, intimidation and violence in the 1980s.
You can read all about it here.

As some who is not a native Philadelphian, I'm fascinated by this article. I've read quite a bit about the "five families" in New York City, but I've never read much about the Philadelphia mob.

Does anyone have knowledge of cosa nostra's history here in Philadephia? Was it ever as significant as in New York?

Angelo Bruno was a guy from the Gambinos in New York he ran the Phlly mob for 20ish years. He was one of the old school lay low mafia guys. He had is head blown off with a shotgun, in his car or on his porch, i can remember the picture from the Bulletin, looked like the porch. It was an inside job , but it wasn't okayed first and then the guy that killed him got whacked for killing a boss without permission.

Little Nicky ended up in charge a little while later and there was a Sopranos style war and lots of dudes got wiped out. I think Joey Melrino's dad was Scarfo's second, and Scarfo eventually wanted to kill Merlino's dad after they all got arrested.

Scarfo went to jail and Nicky jr was shot. They think Joey Merlino tried to kill him, but he lived and left town and Joey ran things for awhile.

It is weird he is coming back. You would think after he was almost killed once it would be enough. I can't imagine there isn't bad blood still.

Angelo Bruno was killed in his car in front of his house on Snyder av.
Phil Testa was blown up on his porch in Girard Estates

For the record, I know absolutely nothing about anything being written here. In fact, I never watched the Sopranos. And I love penne with vodka sauce.

I was fascinated with the whole Philly mob scene myself and I've read a bunch of books about it. I would say the best one was: The Last Gangstar by George Anastasia. There is also a series of books called Before Bruno by C. Morello....but I thought the one by Anastasia was a bit better. There is also a book called Black Brothers about the Black Mafia in Philly by Sean Patrick Griffin. I thought that book was great also.

Its tough to compare with the likes of Ratner's on the
Lower East side, but the only place that even comes close
when mentioning the Kosher Nostra is Famous Delicatessen
at Fourth and Bainbridge .....

The best book on the Philly Mafia is Anastasia's "Blood and Honor".
