I know a lady who's really into island culture and the music... she plays those steel drums. but she's not from there. i bet she would be delighted to get to know more islanders. but i've not been coming on here recently, and haven't seen her online much either. will alert her, though.

Some people consider Venezuela to be "Caribbean." Well, the coast more so than where I'm from.
I have a neighbor a couple blocks over who's from Trinidad... doesn't post on PB, though (that I'm aware of).

I have cousins who still live on Barbados. I believe that my family has been there since the 30's or 40's. Doesn't really make me an islander, but I've been over to visit at least once a decade or so since the 80's.
Big fan of Banks Beer, and 4 square (the rum not the phillyblogger though I am not anti-4square) http://www.foursquarerum.com/ http://www.banksbeer.com/ I am also a huge fan of the Roti .... though most I purchased from the Chefette as it was close to the hotel I stayed at last visit .... http://www.chefette.com/ |

Wow, thanks for the replies.
History lesson, there was a big contigent of West Indians/Caribbeans in South Philly before they placed themselves in West and North. My Grandfather and others were part founders of the Jamaican-American Association before it broke off into JACCA and another distinct groups, of course all I know about is J'cans. The majority that settled in Philly were from the Marcus Garvey Movement. Now there is a lot of "us" in west philly and germantown, olney and cheltenham. I go to the west indian market constantly on 52nd and Walnut (not the big one, the smaller one.) Wow, I am not alone on here. I went to the Carnival 1st time in Philly last year. I go to New York for my carnival and other places so I thought I should go and see. Other places we consider "west-indian" is Panama, Belize, Guyana I believe. I didn't know about Venezuela!! Cultural overides continent! Keep in touch and let me know what is happening in the community!
