Hal--

I have heard of that book and read a blip from it. I guess the main problem that I have is I want change to happen right away not 10 years down the road. I am not a patient person in those respects. People have also told me that you should go back to what you wanted to be when you were a kid and go from that. However, I wanted to be a dentist when I was little and there is no way I would want to be one now.

Hmm... that would make me either an airplane pilot or a chemist, only I forget which one of those came first :?

Hmm, just didn't fit that job after seeing Steve Martin
in "Little Shop of Horrors"?

Be a Dentist
  • When I was young and just a bad little kid,
My momma noticed funny things I did.
Like shootin' puppies with a BB-Gun.
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done,
    I'd find a pussy-cat and smack it's head.
    That's when my momma said...
    (What did she say?)
She said my boy I think someday
    You'll find a way
To make your natural tendencies pay...

    You'll be a dentist.
You have a talent for causing things pain!
    Son, be a dentist.
People will pay you to be inhumane!

You're temperment's wrong for the priesthood,
And teaching would suit you still less.
    Son, be a dentist.
    You'll be a success.

"Here he is folks, the leader of the plaque."
"Watch him suck up that gas. Oh My God!"
"He's a dentist and he'll never ever be any good."
"Who wants their teeth done by the Marqui DeSade?"

"Oh, that hurts! Wait! I'm not numb!"
"Eh, Shut Up! Open Wide! Here I Come!"

    I am your dentist.
And I enjoy the career that I picked.
    I'm your dentist.
And I get off on the pain I inflict!

    I thrill when I drill a bicuspid.
It's swell, though then tell me I'm mal-adjusted.

And though it may cause my patients distress.
    Somewhere...Somewhere in heaven above me...
I know...I know that my momma's proud of me.
    "Oh, Momma..."

    'Cause I'm a dentist...
    And a success!

    "Say ahh..."
    "Say AHhhh..."
    "Say AAARRRHHHH!!!"
    "Now Spit!"

I just want to be a big bunny when I grow up.

I honestly think that we are not meant to keep with one occupation our entire lives. People reach the height of their careers after 20 or so years anyway, so unless you want to feel "finished," why don't you try another hat on?

There is infinite information in the universe, and so much that is really interesting, why limit yourself to one thing? I tried many different majors in college until I settled on English, because I finally found something that felt good, and that I am using in a career that I totally enjoy.

My friends teased me about changing majors so much, but who cares. Life is meant to be enjoyed. I think we are never meant to stop playing. That's one reason we like sex, because it's playful. Many people try to major in sex in college, but I don't suggest that to anyone.

Take a class in anything that seems like it would be fun.

I took a really cool agricultural class on growing veggies and it helps me hoard carrots now

I agree with Dave that it sometimes helps to approach your current profession in a different way.

I used to hate my job. I worked for a medium-sized law firm in Center City where I managed one of the departments. I was undervalued, overworked and generally miserable. It spilled out into my "real life" to the point where it was making me a miserable person. So I quit. I knew I was a good lawyer (yes, there is such a thing) and I just needed to find the right forum to prove it. And I did. I am so-o much happier.

I'd be careful about grad school or other training programs unless you're pretty sure it's the direction you want to go. I think one of the problems in this country is that we amass tons of debt creating the life that we think we want and then we're stuck trying to pay for that life.
