Hey guys & gals -
I had a great idea to take my boyfriend to the Airport, find somewhere to park, and have a cute, romantic little picnic-type thing while watching the planes and stars at night. Would anyone know where a good parking place to do this would be? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much!

Not sure it's open at night, but Fort Mifflin, at the end of Hog Island Road, is also right at the end of a runway. There are some picnic tables on the fort grounds. Again, it may be better as a day thing. When I was there a few years ago the planes were coming in so low you could count the rivets in their skin.

Fort Mifflin is probably the best choice for seeing planes landing, but you'd have to ask the caretakers- There are some nice concrete observation platforms out in Heinz Preserve, but they're a bit of a hike to get to - there isn't much space along the levees and trails. I'm pretty sure the Heinz Preserve closes at dusk- but there's the main Visitor's Center off Lindeburgh, west of Island Ave. Near the south end of Heinz is an old jetty on the west of Rote 420- it's the south side of Darby Creek. On the north side of the creek is the old Morton historic site - that's not closed off, but also probably closes at dusk- Further down river, the Lazaretto, aka Governor Printz Park in Essington isn't a bad view open area, parking beside the night club. A last idea is to borrow or rent a boat (assuming you know how to boat), from someplace- perhaps over by the Ben Franklin Bridge, go down past Philly and tie up alongside Fort Miflin or further south on little tinicum island- Hal |

Ahhh, nothing more romantic then the sound of Jet engines and the screeching of tires on the runway.
