Default Me too!

Just joined PhillyBlog today.
I've lived in Philly for ~2.5yrs....but I gotta admit, I relied on travelling down to B'more/DC (where I'm from), or up to NYC on the weekends to hang out with family or friends. Now, slowly friends are moving away from those places, and I'm realizing I need to stay in Philly more on the weekends and meet new people here, other than my coworkers (who I love by the way!).

Its tough :-(

I have maybe a handful of friends here...but they don't live in the city itself, and often just wanna do stuff in the suburbs. Plus...chances are they might not stick around this area for too long, so I really need to create a friends network around here.

Soo....any ideas would be helpful!! :-) I'm kinda shy at first...but once I get to know people, I value my friendships with them, and definitely not shy after a while.

I'm an old lady of 40 something now, two kids and out in the burbs but moved here about 18 years ago when my (then fiancee) now husband got a job and wanted to make some of my own friends -- I met some people through a running club that I joined - I also joined a professional organization and went to their events and had to sometimes force myself to introduce myself and make conversations with people - I also made some great friends through my job and they are definitely people that I wouldn't have pictured myself hanging out with - beyond the happy hour (which is fun anyway) thing -- if a decent movie was playing, art museum, that type of stuff -I did a lot of the intitiating which is hard - I have to say I've maintained several of those friendships through the 16 years I've been here and if I hadn;t stepped out a bit I never would have. I have a shy streak up in the beginning, so it took a lot of commitment on my side. Philly is a great city and has lots to do -- so enjoy!!!

Welcome to the newbies; and I seriously doubt that 40 something is old at all.

Consider coming to the next PB happy hour.

I meant to chime in on that account - by all means come to happy hours. PB can be one way to meet some interesting new people. Most of us are pretty normal, really.

Here's the thread on the April HH:
