Has anyone out there heard of Hurry Date? I saw them listed in the Philly Weekly or Citypaper awhile back. Every month they have events scheduled for a specific age range at local establishments like World Fusion. You pay $35 and spend 3 minutes with 25 eligibles. It looks like they're nationwide.
I haven't been to one yet, but think it will be good for research . . . http://www.hurrydate.com/ belle |

I never been to one myself, but know of a few friends that have tried it. There's also a couple off-shoots of Hurry date that have came about. Seems like individual bars and other singles groups in philly are creating their own hurry-date (eg. I think Wharton had their own private "hurry-date" with the Med school).
Overall my friends said it was fun. None of them found a relationship from it though. One said he encountered a group of 5 girls where only 2 were single (they were only there for a girls night out). Another said one girl read a list of questions off a paper. Another said the guys sound like they were telling you their resume. Another said after a round was done, his girl was still speaking to the previous guy ignoring him completely (so he started to speak to the next girl he was supposed to meet). All in all they said it was just a fun experience. I'm actually interested in the limo-scavenger hunt Wash DC does where you get a group of people, hop into one of a few limos and spend 4 hours trying to find things on a list. Snacks are in the limo and you can socialize with people in the limo with you. The Limo that wins the hunt gets a free dinner and free use of the limo for the rest of the night. I think initial cost was like $25 per person. If anyone is interested in setting this up in Philly, I'm game to help set it up! |

A friend of mine actualy met his current wife at a "Speed-Date" event. He had five minutes to talk to each woman and at the end of the night both men and women would decide which person, if any, they were interested in. If two people picked each other, they would exchange numbers and take it from there.

Hey Belle,
I just tried www.8minutedaing.com with some girlfriends (we are all single). It was fun and interesting. I think the key is to go with a group of friends, have an open mind and have fun. I didn't find someone with that instant attraction and connection on the first go-round, but i did make some friends. We were thinking of trying 3-minute dating next, if you want to join us, please feel free to contact me. |

...and I hated it. Barely one interesting woman in the lot. I was one of 11 guys to 8 women. (3 no-showed) Thirty-five bucks that I'll never see again. Per my post, above, I'm in the over-40 crowd, so there's that whole baggage thing. It's probably a great idea for the younger set. I like you're idea of "three minutes". Maybe everyone could meet, say, 20 members of the opposite sex in one night!

I actually did end up doing Hurry Date last week. I think 3 minutes is more than plenty of time to decide if you want to see the person again, providing you ask the right questions. Otherwise, the conversation could be pretty random and a waste of time.
The night began by signing in, men in one line, women in the other. Each person was assigned a number. A scorecard was given to each person so you could indicate a Y or N next to their number. Then, the women were placed at a table with an alphabet letter from A-Z. Men took their places across from the women and when the whistle blew, moved to the next letter in the alphabet. Unfortunately, there were only 11 men and 25 women. Age ranges were supposed to be women 25-35 and men 30-40. The people seemed fairly normal and there were one or 2 good-looking men. A number of the women were fairly attractive as well. I started by shaking the person's hand and introducing myself. Then asked the following questions. You might find some of the responses amusing: What was the last book you read? - Book? Ya know, I don't really read much. - I'm not a big reader, maybe a magazine or the newspaper once in a while. - Geez, I don't remember. Have you ever travelled or lived abroad? - Does Toronto count? - No, I've never been out of the United States. - I went to Cancun once. If you could quit your current job, what would your dream job be? - Golf pro - Baseball pro - To be on TV - Wedding photographer - One actually did say he had his dream job The responses pretty much ruled everyone out and I have yet to enter the scores (i.e. a Y or N), although there was one guy that had some potential. And, some of the men were definitely over 40. All in all, it wasn't a bad experience. Not sure if I would recommend it only because it seems so contrived. But, I guess it's as a good way to meet someone as any other. belle |
