It's realtor talk - don't listen to the sound of I-95 . . . And ignore the fact that you will get to watch and hear whatever construction happens at Penn's Landing (if any).

I go by these everyday, well actually I crap my dog near them. I do pick up after him but others don't. There is some diseased looking trash around there. I don't think it's a very desirable location really. And now with Metro moving there ain sheet around there unless you can live off of alcohol and expensive bar food.

I wonder which buildings these are? Front and Market "area" leaves some wiggle room, even for realtors and developers.

There are for rent signs on several buildings near there. One says starting at 1k a month but it's on market. There isn't much south of market on front, well a shabby building or two above the clubs. No gracias. I posted a picture awhile back of a nice big fat juicy rat whose final resting place was right near there actually... bless his soul.
Might be north of market. 1850 a mo. though? I guess if your young and have the loot. I'd rather live in Rittenhouse personally and I could for that kind of money. Try and get some coffee in the morning. You'll have to walk to Farmacia by the end of the month.

Metropolitan is moving out? That's too bad - I was pres. of OCCA when we recruited them. Got folks to write letters to Wendy Smith Born welcoming them.
I know that Tim McDonald sold the building so that's probably the reason.

Here's a clarification of that story from this week's City Paper:
http://citypaper.net/articles/current/food2.shtml off the menu by Juliet Fletcher This week, rumors have been circulating — among bread and coffee-lovers, and those who enjoy finding a corner of Old City to hang out in during the daytime — that Metropolitan Bakery was ready to close its Second and Market branch. In fact, it's true, but there's more. Turns out that the current location, between Front and Second streets on Market, was "not a great block for business, not for Metropolitan," according to co-owner Wendy Born. With the lease up, she's decided to consolidate in an unusual way. "We are not closing exactly, but moving into the Farmicia bar." The advantages of such a move, slated for early April, are financial: Since Born and Metro co-owner James Barrett also own the aforementioned restaurant just two blocks over, they will neatly end up with only one Old City rent to pay. But is this "consolidation of brother and sister locations" a solution for restaurateurs who want to offer two choices to different clienteles, all under one roof? Born anticipates the move will help both businesses: Metro will benefit from the attentions of "a professional kitchen" and will offer hot items each day for breakfast, while the regular appeal of brioche and hot beverages should increase traffic to the upscale Farmicia. Other branches will remain unchanged. Staff arrangements and menu additions and subtractions are still being finalized, but the bakery's original fans won't be bereft of their local hangout. In fact, Born reckons they'll be better served in mornings and afternoons than they are by bars catering to visiting night owls. This is "an attempt to give local people in Old City somewhere to go!" |

Thanks Niel -
It makes sense - and nearly everything that Wendy does makes sense. They haven't (she and James) made a misstep yet (that I know of) - other than stopping baking potato dill bread. That block has always been a problem - it's one of the reasons that we put the Farmer's Market down there a few years back - to draw people to that block of Market. The move will probably hurt Shane's a bit - but Barry Shane has such a following that he should be fine. The loss of the butcher hurt, as well. Maybe they can take over Pizzacato and Bijou. What a nice thought that would be.

What about the old building at the corner of Front & Market, across from the bus stop area and the I-95 on-ramp? It's been empty as long as I've been in Philly, despite it's being a nice building and a pretty decent location (well, if Warmdaddy's, La Famiglia, and Panorama can be successful down there it must not be so bad). That's the former site of the early-18th-century London Coffee House, if I'm not mistaken.
Any thoughts on this property, Chris? Why has it never been developed? |
