I'm familiar with the phenomenon you describe--I run groups in a psychiatric setting and, as you note, people can be surprised by others' perceptions of them and also, when it comes to their own perceptions of others, by the apparently (though not always entirely!) simple reasons behind facial expressions, habitual affect patterns, etc. Most people have probably been surprised at being told we have a certain expression on our faces that feels alien to us (me included, of course).
