@old old city: do you have a reference for where you heard about or saw this proposal? How many chickens do they have there that they need semi-trucks instead of smaller ones? The only other times I've seen semis here is during construction and occasionally moving companies who are too lazy to use a shuttle truck. Definitely not a regular basis that would require eliminating parking permanently. I would not be surprised if someone at the parkominium or other garages is paying off someone at city hall to do this.

So what you're saying is you'd rather have to deal with semi-trucks than cars when you're biking through the city? Diesel fumes is not my idea of a good bike ride. You're probably too busy buzzing past them to notice when their back wheels rumble over the corners of sidewalks and take out stoplight poles and almost kill some pedestrians like I saw at 6th and walnut one time (while walking, not driving).

My neighbor has been dealing with the ward leader about getting the illegal 4 am deliveries stopped to this place. According to her the traffic engineer said that removing parking would make it easier for the trucks to maneuver the streets at night. The place in question is a middle man and sells Perdue, Allen's and Mountaire poultry to places in North and west Philly.

No I notice it, I just tune it out, because I live in a city. They're even worse in New York. If you want to campaign to keep the semis off small streets, that's one thing, but doing it in the name of 29 parking spaces is ridiculous. That's what gets me. The hundreds of people in this city who refuse to give up a car they don't need and feel as if they have some inalienable right to drive several blocks as easily as they can in the suburbs.

I would bet you don't deal with it on a nightly basis at 4 am. What's ridiculous is inconveniencing dozens of residents for a place that has 6 employees ( 4 don't even live in this state) and is breaking the law by getting deliveries before 6am by semi. It WILL bring down property value, it will making parking more difficult, it will add pollution, they will still knock down street lights, signs, trees and fire hydrants. You liking cars in the city has nothing to do with this. Theses trucks also leave a trail of a defrosting chicken broth that runs out the back of truck and I'm sure Kelly as well as everyone else wants that too. Every single person I've talked to said they will take the parking spaces over the trucks every single time.

Hey dude, I know you weren't referring to me, but I live in the neighborhood and work in sales and drive every single day to make my living. I need those parking spots. I have also stopped at home during the day from time to time and have a lot of easy parking spaces because most people that park there at night live there and work outside the city. I'm happy that were so blessed for a job in the city, but the LARGE majoirty of jobs in the region are outside of the city in the suburbs of PA/NJ. There are also quite a bit of businesses here in the neighborhood that need those spots from people coming to visit and spend their money in the nieghborhood. So you can keep riding your bike to work, but the rest of us don't have that option to go to Bucks or Montgomery County on a bike.

Perhaps you have a friend that drives to Market East; that person is a dope. In our little neighborhood, I can safely assume that the large majoirty of people work outside of the city or the city-accessible by train or trolley.

Who are the people that you hang out with that do this driving just for a couple of blocks? Where do they park when they get there? Again, I'm happy that you don't drive, thats great, but I just got home and will leave my car there for the weekend. If someone gets a good spot, they generally will leave it there for a few days. If they are driving in and going to the shops on 3rd or a restaurant, we need those spots.

While they are taking away street parking can they remove the spots on the east side of 3rd street before Race (in front of Sassafrass and before)?

There needs to be a turning area for cars going right as it is the entrance to 95N and N and S Columbus/Del Ave a block ahead. The intersection is No Turn on Red and then there are always people walking across and only 1 lane of driving which sits and sits. The area isnt't the same as it was 10 years ago and there is much foot traffic and more cars. The traffic control in this city needs to evolve.

They would have to remove the bus stop for that. But for rush hour that's not a bad idea.

Parking spaces on Vine St. are not really of any particular concern to me (I am car-less, and am perfectly happy to use public transit to get to my job in the deep suburbs), but I agree that huge trucks should not be driving the streets of Old City, especially at night.
