Default Taxi Scam

Center City Taxi Scam

Posted Today at 02:03 AM by PhiResident
The incidence took place tonite on a taxi to home (South Philly)from 12th and Spruce st. We handed a $20 bill to a cab driver and were shockingly told we didn't give enough money for the ride only cost $6.30. He told us we only gave to him a $5 dollar bill. But we saw the driver stuck a $20 dollar bill which just got handed to him underneath a stack of money.
At the moment, we knew he was lying so we insisted that was $20 dollar bill and we needed the correct change back. He has got to realize that he would not get away with it so he gave us $13 dollar change.
I regretted not jotting down his license plate number and then call the police. He was a very heavy set Indian nationality and not sure what cab company was it but the vehicle was painted in blue and white colors....

I am telling this hoping to inform everyone who read this to be cautious and to prevent this dishonest cab driver from playing same trick to any riders.....

Don't ever hand a cab driver a twenty dollar bill. Ever. Travel with ones and fives at all times.

i've scheduled cabs for a ride to 30th station or the airport, early weekday mornings. and these other cabs will spot me, drive up and pretend they are the service i called for. its a known thing they do, but i throw this out there for anyone new to the area. you need to beware because they may charge more, esp to the airport if you called for a limo service. as well as cutting into the cab companies offering you the complimentary service.

When the cab driver does a $20 swap, just get out of the cab and walk the OPPOSITE direction of travel on the street so the cab driver can't crawl his cab down the street and yell at you.

I have had this happen to me three times with A_____ CITY CABS [if you live here, you know which cab company I am referring to].

I have BANNED that cab company. When one of their cabs pulls up on the curb when I'm flagging, I wave them off. If they will not leave I shoot them the finger so they will leave.

If you get into an altercation with a cab driver short changing you, or telling you that the credit card terminal in the passenger seat is broken, get outside and walk to the PASSENGER side of the car and look on the hood.

A Philadelphia Cab will have a medallion on the front hood on the passenger side of the vehicle. Whip out your cell phone and dial the number that's on the mediallion. That's the easiest way to record the mediallion number so you can remember to call the Philadelphia Parking Authority to report the cab driver the next day.

Do not take sh__ from cab drivers. 99% of them are good guys and I have a short list of cab drivers that I call personally when I need to take a trip [Sonny and Ahmed of Olde City, you're the greatest!], but there's that 1% who are total sh_ts who should have never been given a driver's license by PennDOT, much less been allowed to ever buy a car.

Here's a Great Tip for City Living: Have you ever had a really good cab ride? As in, you had a blast with the cab driver and thought he was a totally cool dude? Get his phone number when you tip him extra. There are a LOT of cabbies who will be more than happy to take personal calls and will squelch the radio and pick you up if you call the cabbie directly, just ask him what days and hours he normally works... and they do this in expectation of your very generous tip and nice attitude. All cabbies have cell phones and they are constantly on the phone anyway... they'll answer their "backline" and pick you up if they know you.

I had totally forgotten about that! I had this one guy I would call when I waited tables.
I have to remember to do that again.

I use taxi's all the time and almost always hand over 20's (though often my fare is over $10 anyway), no problems to date.

I will heed your advice in the future though, might as well quite while I'm ahead.
