Its a bit tricky to explain, but its really not too complicated.
Phase is a frequently-used term around AC. The word comes from Greek fasis, "appearance," from fanein, "to appear." It originally referred to the eternally regular changing appearance of the moon through each month, and then was applied to the periodic changes of some quantity, such as the voltage in an AC circuit. Electrical phase is measured in degrees, with 360° corresponding to a complete cycle. A sinusoidal voltage is proportional to the cosine or sine of the phase.
Three-phase, abbreviated 3?, refers to three voltages or currents that that differ by a third of a cycle, or 120 electrical degrees, from each other. A cycle happens in this country 60 times a second. Another way to say it is 60 hertz. There are only a few cities in the US that even still use 2 phase. Its an old type of power source that Peco still keeps in operation, just for some of our old services still in use, in fact there are quite a few blocks/buildings still being fed from 2 phase sources.
Hope this helps without being and overdose of info
