Always love that definition - especially the idea that Old City was founded in the 1950s.

And, no, it never ever ever gets the friggin "e" at the end of Old.

The bounaries are all over the place. That city listing is for the planning district (and the definition that was used for the National Historic Register).

On the other hand, Old City Civic Assoc. expanded its definition to include parts of 7th Street (supposedly at the request of College of Physicians and WHYY). I wonder. And it's amazing we didn't set off a tong war with the Chinatown folks.

The Historic District (city) is far smaller and does not take in the 7th Street area, as well as not taking in the piers and riverfront.

Old City District (SSD) runs to the south property line of the properties on the southside of Walnut and only runs to Florist Street on the north (next to the bridge). Plus, there are some neat little jigs and gerrymanders to get both the Sheraton and the Ritz theater into the district (ah, what big tax bills you have). On the north, we didn't want to butt heads with Dick Tucker on Vine and with Historic Landmarks over their properties north of Ben Franklin. But damn, we went after that Walnut Street Penn Mutual building money.

B3. Hmph. Some day in the future when they want to "colonialize" that neighborhood they'll have to figure some "old tyme" rendition of that ridiculous moniker.

I grew up in the 50's & 60's on te 500 block of Randolph St (bordered by SpringGarden & Buttonwood Sts, and 5th & 6th Sts. I know this is on the outside edge of Olde City, but what area would this be called? I have just found this site and am very eager to learn more about the area then and now.
Thank you,
Betty

I would guess that you are talking about the area just north of Spring Garden and suspect that it is on the westernmost edge of Northern Liberties.
