Question Not sure if this is true....

I got to talking to a guy in Buffalo last weekend and he said that Sassafras is going to be an Ugly Mug of Cape May fame. According to him the new owners bought a franchise from the Ugly Mug owners.... Rumor was that it was bought by the owners of Bennelux and Eulogy, just hope they don't fill it with Belgian Beers!!

It would seem that way ManUtdFan, although the opening date is a little off. I know nothing of this bar. I just hope it maintains the same chill atmosphere. It was the one place in Old City, surrounded by over-the-top-annoying-house-music-playing-full-of-scantily-clad-dressed-females-in-the-middle-of-february-and-selling-inebriated-and-horny-patrons-over-priced-watered-down-drinks bar, that was a nice place to spend a weekend night. (I am getting curmudgeonly in my early 30s).

Wow that is interesting. If they keep to the Ugly Mug theme it should be a pretty good neighborhood bar. I'm still gonna miss Frank and the gang from Sasafrass though!!

Default Sassafras: the latest

The old place is being taken over by a former bartender and the word is he is partnered with a bartender from Eulogy. Perhaps that's where the Eulogy ownership rumor started?

Either way I understand they intend to nurture it lovingly and bring it back to it's former glory days!

Huzzar!

There were issues that slowed the transition but it is my understanding everything is moving forward as initially planned.

And yes, Lamb Burgers will remain on the menu.

Also, I understand there are plans to make the upstairs a very comfortable, low key turn-of-the-century London style Gentleman's club (obviously not the modern connotation of the term! And obviously for Ladies And Gentlemen) with lots of leather wingback chairs, marble fireplace, warm velvet drapes, bookcases and oil paintings.

I guess we will see a help wanted sign for butlers!

I used to be in there at least once, sometimes twice a week, and in its last year before it closed, it started to change- heading in THAT direction as far as the patrons and music were concerned. It all started when the main bartender left. After that, some of the bartenders started playing club music sometimes, and the overall type of music changed when different bartenders came in. They started playing newer, more commercial music, and a lot of "hipsters" and other clubgoers started coming in, compared to the diverse crowd it used to have.
My husband and I weren't spending as much time there as we previously had because of that. You can find that anywhere in OC.
I hope it will be more like it was before that happened when it reopens. It was a breath of (stale, old cigarette smoke laden) "fresh" air. I wonder where the chef is...I'd go wherever he is for his lamburgers!!

EDIT: Ah, I didn't read the previous post! GREAT NEWS!

I hope that the new place is still "Martin friendly".

I was hoping to go there dressed as Emo Phillips next time, just to test them.
