No, parking permits are by districts, and only exempts you from certain meters and parking limits in the district. The rule is that a street side must have at least "50% residential" for a parking permit to be valid. So the permit wouldn't apply on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Market, Chestnut, etc.

Old City is in district 10, which also extends north and includes Northern Liberties.

We should maybe also point out that all of the residential spots are marked as so. For example, the parking sign might say "3 Hour Parking 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM Mon-Fri" Then below there will be a smaller sign saying "Except Permit #10" with the "#10" fairly large. A permit is good in those spots and only those spots. Otherwise you are held to all of the posted rules.

All the information in this thread has been very helpful.

My husband and I recently moved to Old City. Some family and friends can easily take the train for visits.

Other family (high maintenance family) for example from the Pocono's don't have the train option. They also are freaks about their cars and are scared of the city.

I really want my Pocono family to visit and have a positive experience. As a matter a fact, they are picking me up on their way to the Atlantic City car show Saturday morning. They will drop me off on their way home. I would love to tell them to stay Saturday night (we have the room for them) and we can enjoy a day in the city Sunday. The problem is parking Saturday night. Were can they park that won't cost a fortunate and their car will be safe?

I have been walking around looking at different garages. It seems some garages are not open on Sunday? And I'm having trouble if someone leaves a car say Saturday afternoon and comes back Sunday around 2 pm how much should that cost?

I'm going to review (walk around make some calls) the list Clayton had on this thread.

Thanks

Update:

I called some places listed on Philadelphia Parking Authority's website. The woman I spoke to informed me the pricing information is old and incorrect. That's nice.... I already knew that from walking around to the garages and looking at the posted signs.

PAL Parking 24x7 on Race Street between 3rd and 4th seems alright indoor garage. I walked by and spoke to the guy working there tonight. He was tough to understand. From what I got $17 if we come in after 5 pm (before 5 pm seems to be discounted) and $9 for Sunday = $26. Odd thing is as I thanked the guy for the information and began to walk away he started saying something like they would be willing to negotiate, huh is this a common practice?!

Parkominium was $20 for Saturday night. The attendant was not sure how much for Sunday. How can you not know how much the parking is?

The garage at Independence which you can enter from 6th and or 5th Street between Arch and Market seemed alright too $17 for 24 hours. Don't recall the Sunday deal.

This is a hassle there really needs to be train transportation from the Pocono's!

Annie Hall,

I'm not sure a parking permit is that beneficial at your location -- most of the spaces in that area are not eligible for parking permits. Only the west side of 5th is eligible. Vine (including the part that wraps around to Wood), Wood, and the east side of 5th do not have exclusions for parking permits -- but they are free-for-alls without time limitation anyhow.

Having a parking permit only exempts you from posted regulations where signed. If you've just moved there, I'd definitely check out the parking scene before paying for a permit.

It's a shame I didn't read this earlier. There was a spot open in my lot at 4th and Vine St for $95 a month.
