I used to walk my dog through that mess last year during the weekend and it didn't seem that bad, but lately the last 6-9 months it seems it got worse. now, i just take her in our courtyard because you can't move through the streets.

Bank st. where we currently live while fixing up our house is appalling from wed. - sat. it seems there are more people in the alley then in the bars on our street. It almost seems as the crowd that has been there the last year few months doesn't actually go into any of the places, just hangs out outside them.

While eating late one evening at anthony's (sorry skinners) outside, I saw the same groups of people just walking back and forth up and down the street, too frequently to be bar hopping.

Always irreverent. Do they have this problem in Adam's Morgan?Laslty, I don't think there is any real problem with nightlife in Philly. That somehow there is no nice places to go. rittenhouse being older isn't really true except that the new areas (north of rittenhouse) attract a 25-34 crowd as opposed to 21-25 crowd.
I agree...there are NO problems with nightlife...or to have clubs/bars/pubs... I LOVE IT!! I love being able to live in a city where people are actually OUT... but anyways....I just do NOT know what to do about the violence....the thing that gets me...is I would figure Old City would attract a more "elegant", sophsiticated type places---which would bring that type of crowd... like Rittenhouse does...or the areas around it...when I go out to Woodys and the likes of that out there....I do NOT see this type...I feel safe and just have fun out near Washington Square...however, walking home at 2am through Old City is a little rough... I do NOT understand what happened...and how Old City could attract such business and crowds.... I agree with the cop thing... they should do that....but its so sad that's what Old City has to reduce to...to even be compared to South St is AWFUL... but hey, the truth hurts.... I have noticed since living here that Philadelphia has much transformation to go... it seems the city is reviving and revitalizing...but damn.... what happened the past few years to prevent it so long? I thought I was moving to a more open-minded and "fun", urban city... however, most of the time I find it to be quite the opposite....I just hate that...b/c last year when I would visit Philadelphia....it just did NOT seem this way.... I hope it changes with the new year.... or atleast the mayor will change.... hahaha

Well a friend of mine moved out of New York b/c of the meatheads on the weekend outside his East Village Apartment. The bars in Old City should be more spread out with dining options being available after 2am.

I agree!!!!! It seems this city's main priority is nightlife and bars... where are all the 24 hour places to eat, buy groceries, get a cup of coffee and hang out? BESIDES WAWA! hahahaha... That sucks about NYC.... but atleast NYC is big enough you can get away from most of it....here, its like they are everywhere!! They are overrunning our city!!!!! WE MUST TAKE IT BACK!!! hahahahaha..

no, they are overrunning old city. I don't see too much of it in my neck of the woods. grocery stores need residents, not bar patrons. there was to be another 24 hour diner in old city but the OCCA fought it so it became another bar. We have a few places over here. Pizza place on 13th st til 4am, Letto Deli until 4am. 24 hr 7-11 and News Agency. Pizza Place on 12th until 3 am. diner (11tha nd sansom) 24 hours.

there is that pizza place midblock 2nd btwn. market and chestnut. i was there for the 1st time on the night in question...it sucks. the pizza isn't great, it's filled w/ drunks who are constantly yelling "beer me!" (i have nothing against wetting your whistle, in fact i do it w/ the best of them, but once you get loud and obnoxious that's when i want to knock your lights out), and the management is not very friendly (i prolly wouldn't be either w/ the type of patrons that they get).

not all the places in old city are bad, it's just that a few bad apples overshadow the good ones. khyber is an awesome place for live music and i hear that eulogy is pretty good as well. buff billiards ain't bad either.

No thats cool, you have Pathmark's and fresh grocer's, that 24 hr coffe shoppe and other places. I was referring to Old City though. Old City needs it.I think the residents only have themselves to blame. They didn't want a 24 hour dinner opening up. You end up risking a life. The vast majority of the meatheads don't live here. The people of Old City are risking the lives of these people by having them drive back to the burbs. They complained that it would bring chaos...I doubt you could bring more chaos then is already there! The problem would to just have 1 but if you open a few...it will lessen the flow...causing fewer problems.

This is the way Old City used to be, 10-12 years ago. In fact, I remember when the Old City neighborhood was only considered to be north of Market Street. This is the part of Old City where you will find art galleries, decent restaurants and mellow bars. IMO, this area has still retainded the same charm, while the area south of Market has become a replacement for the Delaware Ave. nightclubs.

Not to sound hypocritical. Every city with a nightlife has meatheads. Bars know they cause trouble and are disrespectful BUT they buy a lot of drinks and are frequent customers. A new resaurant is opening in Old City that is supposedly not Old City, more Rittenhouse. Hey I like Old City, just not after 10pm on a weekend.

I hate to say it...but its not the people of Old City that are risking lives.... how can you put that on their hands?? The choice of drinking and driving rests on the hands of the individuals that are stupid enough to do so.... its not the people that wants this trash gone that is to blame....its the trash to blame... I know they do NOT live here...THANKFUL for that...if they did the city would be run down by now....just like Camden...hahaha... nah, but really...you can NOT blame people who want to keep this part of the city beautiful for drunks driving and killing themselves.... and that's not even the point of this blog...its the shooting... and the chaos, the fighting, the littering... etc..... most Old City residents have been here for quite some time... I am new.... and would LOVE to participate in the decision making... however, the voting off a 24 hour diner was a stupid stupid thing.... b/c you do NOT have to be an alcoholic to enjoy a greasy burger at 3am!!! I think it would just be better if they just spaced the clubs out a bit... one thing I have noticed about Philly though, is there are hardly any clubs... I should just say bars and pubs...b/c Philly lacks dance clubs... its just all pissdrunk places...
