Does anyone have anything good to say about this place?
I just moved in around here and I could see I won't be here for long. I got lucky, though. The people on my block are nice. The people in the surrounding blocks are crappy, though. Too many teenagers around here screaming at the top of their lungs. Oh... and then there's that PWT couple just around the corner screaming and cursing at eachother every night in a drunken rage. Does anyone have anything good to say about Tacony?

I worked in Tacony for two years and think you gotta give it more time. Some real cool spots there. Streets on either side of Princeton Avenue between Torresdale and Tulip are filled with same name Italian families, every other house. Daughter lives two doors down from mom, who lives across the street from her sister, who lives next door to her cousin. Walk down them houses in the late afternoon and you can hear Sinatra and smell spaghetti gravy. The houses in between say Princeton, Keystone, Torresdale, and Longshore are beat up but beautiful. Huge haunted Victorian looking things with black iron fences and yards full of religious statues. Jackson Street between Princeton and Wellington has horse poles on the curbs. The P and S Ravioli company at Torresdale and Princeton has purported mob ties. Never even used to be open, ever. Just sat there. Cool easy to miss record shop at Torresdale and Unruh.
Problem now is neighborhood is changing, getting poorer and meaner, especially Torresdale from Comly down to Frankford (the neighborhood, not Ave). Not quite sure where in Philly youd expect not to find screaming teens though. Get some headphones and take a pill kid. |

IMPAQ -
Are you originally from Philadelphia? I'm going through something kinda similar and am wondering if I made a mistake moving here from NY. I live in Center City, right in the middle of everything and am very happy with the neighborhood... except for the porn theatres, gentleman's clubs, and loiterers who stand on my corner, day and night, offering who knows what (drugs? sex? whatever). They don't really bother anyone, but there's no earthly reason for them to be there, and it concerns me more for the younger college kids who live nearby. (Me, I've got my "I come from New York, don't screw with me" attitude to keep me warm.) When I mentioned this on the blog, I was told that my block is also a neighborhood in transition -- although I'm told that it's transitioning UP instead of down; it used to be much worse a few years ago. I can't imagine. In any case, if I don't find a job soon, the point will be moot... it'll be back to NY / NJ for me...

actually, thouhg i think that block used to be worse, i think that activity has actually gotten worse over the last couple years in center city. the last mayor worked hard on cc b/c he felt it was the face of philadelphia to newcomers. the new one has spread the police force very thin. looking for a job IN philly means healthcare and PEnn for the most part. if you ahve any questions on how far a job in the burbs is, please ask. the commute to the burbs isn't that bad on SEPTA for the most part.
ps-if philly can't do something about it's lack of jobs you won't be the only one leaving. that is why many of us were so frstrated with street. he is so indifferent to whether people work or not. to him more jobs for minorities is giving minorities more city contracts. |

I hate seeing the kids in my neighborhood just hanging around places being essentially nothing but litter. We have a chinese food place on the corner of my block which gets annoying sometimes. Folks just run the stop sign at the corner like it was a green light on a race track. I've almost gotten hit a few times crossing the street to my car. It got to the point one day I ran after a car and threw my soda at it. The person kept on driving once I opened up my trunk and showed a bat. LOL I just like a little respect. For my property and my well being.
