An exterminator is going to charge you a lot of money, then will either euthanize or release it nearby. Those damn things can find their way back from distances of up to 5 miles. So a simple dropoff at the local park is an exercise in futility.

My advice:

1. Buy a trap. Bait it with apples covered in peanut butter.

2. Buy a really big trash can, big enough to hold the cage.

3. When you trap the 'hog (which you will--they're not very bright), carefully (ie wearing gloves) pick up the cage and drop it in the trashcan.

4. Put a hose in the can and fill it up with water...

You get the picture.

Don't feel too guilty. Groundhogs have almost no natural predators anymore. They used to be kept in check by larger animals like foxes and wolves. Not too many of them around anymore, so it's up to you to control the population.

Not to mention, they breed extensively, dig tunnels all over the place, and are a legitimate threat to your property. If your neighbor has 'em, odds are you do too.

I would call a wildlife control company. They are licensed to trap and "permanently remove" them. The laws in PA, state that any trapped animal must be released where it was trapped, and NOT relocated. That would mean trapping it, sealing off it's den, then releasing it. Or do what you have to do, and don't tell anyone.
And in PA, skunks DO NOT have to be killed when trapped. It is legal to release them here in PA. Relocating them after trapping is illegal.

Get a Jack Russell Terrior. Wonderful little family pets and the bane of groundhogs.
