Do the schools still require a certain amount of "community service" hours prior to graduation? If they do, our neighborhoods should be sparkling. ![]()

The lighting phase is the first of three phases for the Torresdale Avenue Project (TAP). Along with the new lampposts, MARC will be increasing the wattage on existing street lights to make for a safer avenue at night. TAP also calls for improved crosswalks, entrance ways at Torresdale and Cottman avenues and Torresdale and Harbison avenues, banner poles with neighborhood banners, trash cans, benches, newspaper corrals - designed to enhance the continuity of the avenue. We are also looking into the possibility of rubber sidewalks, which are safer, more durable and environmentally friendly. The bid package for the second phase of TAP, which includes crosswalk improvements, is being finalized by Urban Engineers and should go out for bid later this summer. You can find artist renderings on the Torresdale Avenue Project page of www.marc-cleansweep.com.

The lighting phase of the Torresdale Avenue Project almost doubles the amount of light currently shown on the avenue.
To do this, MARC will add 48 new lampposts as well as 86 new luminaries on the existing street lights. The addition of the new lampposts also involves putting the conduits and electrical lines underground. The exact numbers for the second and third phases are not yet available. The bid package for the second phase will be finalized this summer. However, the project spans just over 2 miles, so that should give you a rough idea of the number of crosswalks. As for the benches, trash cans, etc., MARC is working with the local business associations on the amount and their placement. MARC plans to use BigBelly Solar Compactors for the trash cans. They are powered by 100% solar power and take up as much space as an ordinary receptacle - but the capacity is five times greater. The increased capacity reduces collection trips and can cut fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. The BigBelly is safe, easy to use, and designed to keep out pests. It has already proven its worth in urban streets, parks, colleges and all weather conditions.
