Part of that is that the business owners aren't doing their part. They neither keep convenient hours for customers with jobs nor do much to promote their business. There is a reason why people go to the mall.

When people go to Applebees or Olive Garden rather than patronize a local business that has better food and convenient hours, then I get irked.

That is an AWESOME site Scoats !! You'll have to bear with me a little because I'm the new guy, but how are you tied into the Mayfair business association? Is it only open to businesses? If so, would you mind throwing some of my ideas from here in your next meeting?

Thanks !!

Keep up the good work !! I love to see people who live and work here actually care. It truely inspires hope.

I LOVE the whole Mayfair May-Fair idea. That's AWESOME !! Props to whoever came up with the idea !!

Will Frankford ave be shut down for it kinda like a big block party or what? What can non-business people do to make sure that it's a huge success?

Yeah, I tried to go to Rylie's for an early dinner before on a Sunday. They're closed. The next time I wanted to go out to dinner was--on a Sunday! Rylie- closed.

I'm sure there's a reason for this-maybe Sunday is a slow day for restaurants.. but if we had a good website for the businesses in Mayfair, I would have known that!!

I wax nostalgic, my friend. Once upon a time, in the Pre-Malleoithic Age, the Avenue was open 'til 9PM on Wednesday and Friday nights. It was a time of one car families when Mom stayed home and Dad used the car to commute to work. Very Cleaveresque. I remember Dial Shoes, The York Shop (shamefully traumatizing, as the lady's fitting room had no curtains), Woolworths, Jack Lewis, Parisian, The Merben and the Mayfair. Small corner stores were lined up with people waiting to put in their lunch meat orders so that lunches could be packed each morning. It is my hope, that with the astronomical prices of gas, folks will leave their gas guzzlers home and once again walk the Avenue and patronize the local merchants. With increased profit they can afford to advertise, offer more goods and maybe even have some left over for cosmetic improvements.
Peace,
Joan

Try that Thai place on Cottman right off of Frankford. It's called Kao Tip. I went there again on Sunday. Very good food, but I see they have cut out their lunch hours. I hope it isn't the beginning of the end.

Thanks. I tried a format I hadn't tired before. I'm happy with the look. Glad you like it too.

I am the president of the Business Association. After the job went around the table twice with no takers, I agreed to do it.

The Biz Assoc. historically I believe has only been open to businesses, I think interested neighbors should be a part of it too. We need all the help we can get. If day time general meetings don't work for interested residents, we can hold some of them at night.

I can throw your ideas around, but I wouldn't hold much hope of action on them due to lack of people to execute them. Everyone who is active in the Association has a full time job (some of which feature well over 40hr work weeks) and home lives, which doesn't leave much time for extra unpaid work. However the Association can still help your ideas come to fruition if you can be the one leading the charge on them.

The MBA is blessed with some really active, passionate members. Many of us came together as a team to get the Mayfair May Fair off the ground. Sure there are a lot of biz owners who don't really care, but that is to be expected. The surprise for me was how many really do care and who walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

I am very bullish on Mayfair. We have a lot of folks who really care and a strong civic structure. Things aren't perfect, that's for sure, but I think we are headed in the right direction. We have countless opportunities and the tools and people to achieve them if we are persistent.

That was my idea. Not very high concept, but it is so stupid that it makes me smile every time.

The Ave won't be shut down. The PPA is providing FREE METER PARKING from 10am to 4pm.

This being the first year and starting from scratch, our expectations are rather modest. While modest, it will fun and there will be plenty to do. In future years we can build on what we have done this year. Personally I have big plans for the south end of the Ave. for Mayfair May Fair 2009.

Glad you asked!
- participate in the scavanger hunt.
- go to the opening and closing events, and wander the Avenue in between.
- let other folks know about it.

I'm definately hip to what you guy's are trying to do and ARE doing. PROPS to you !!

I'm really gald that I stopped by this forum when I did. Please do me a favor and keep me / us in the loop as far as when your meetings are. I agree that the residents should also be somewhat involved. After all, it's the residents who will be shopping up on Frankford the most.

You mentioned the scavenger hunt. I was under the impression that it was something just for kids. Is it not? Also I was just looking at all of the businesses involved in the hunt. That's a LOT of walking to be doing from one end of Frankford to the other just to get clues don't you think?

Are you guy's planning on printing this out and stuffing them in the local doors? I think that would be an ecellent way to let people know.

The scavenger hunt is meant to be a family thing, so I guess that means all ages. It is indeed a lot of walking, but then walking is healthy . Maybe next year we'll try to spread it over two days.

That's a good idea for next year.

The May Fair idea is a great one. Has it ever been done before?

As for more bars in the area I'm not sure that's what the avenue needs. Scoats touched on it before where business owners need to stay open past say 7pm for people to come in and shop.

I keep waiting for the Devon Theater project to develop as I think that stretch of the Ave has alot of potential. Tony's has been there forever, the Red Robin as well. You have Chickies and The G-Lodge just down the street so you have some great anchors already in place. Add a couple more businesses that get "it" and I think the renaissance starts there.

I agree 1000%. I wish I had a dollar for every time I walked up to the hardware store on Bleigh only to find it closed, only to walk home, get in my truck, and head on off to the Depot.

I think that area has a serious uphill battle going on. I don't know what the heck kind of businesses are planning on moving in there, but they'd better be REAL good ones !! Hopefully you won't get another nail salon or pawn shop like we do a little further up.
