I can agree with this. Blacks have had a voice in government in this city for quite some time now. There are also plenty of black cops, judges, and prosecutors. The cries of institutional racism are overblown. That said, it doesn't change the content of poster at issue here.

The poster has the right idea, just the wrong message. It's obviously Neo-Nazi bullshit. But it does make a valid point, that it's mostly minorities doing the killings.

I'm not blaming it on race. After all, there's plenty of white trash in this city. Black people need better leaders besides ******* Sharpton, Jesse Jackass or Tupac Shakur.

So what should the message be?

While I agree 100% with your statement, it made me think for a moment

Who do WHITE people have today as role models? Who do WHITE people call for help? ( and NO, I'm NOT suuggesting that skinhead group )

Jesse, Al, may not be the best leaders in the world, but at least black people have SOMEBODY to turn to !!

Food for thought ...

You and I both know that it's too simple to say that minorities are doing the killing and its a function of their race. It's a subset of the population that is completely disconnected from societal norms that is responsible for all of the carnage. That subset is racially and ethnically diverse but disproportionately populated by blacks.

Having said that, there are lots of good black folks out there who are as fed up with this BS as you and have totally repudiated those ways. I'm one of them. You and I agree on lots of issues and I think that we have a value system that's pretty similar ... there's just that one small issue that keeps us from seeing eye to eye. You continue to endorse shoddy race based generalizations that lump the good in with the bad. I'll never understand it.

White people have plenty of people to turn to for inspiration. Politicians, business leaders, civic leaders, actors, musicians, clergy. Black people have good role models too. And your role models don't necessarily have to be the same race as you. I've had more mentors that were white than those who were black.

I don't understand why Al and Jesse get the spotlight. Those clowns need to be kicked to the curb pronto.

Who says we need to call for help anyway?

Self reliance my friend...you know who my role models are?....my father, grandfathers, uncles....even my mother. I dont need a cultural figure to look up to although I do admire plenty of historical figures....Teddy Roosevelt for one....

It reaches a simple minded audience though so the message is sufficient for them. Why complicate things for them?

I agree and I know plenty of them personally....family friends etc....They will even be at my wedding. These are people ive known my entire life who have fought tooth and nail to get to where they are today and I respect that...hard work and dedication are key values that show me people actually give a **** anymore.

But they are the exception....

I see no other solution.....people can talk, march and rally all they want...my opinions will not change.

People aren't that simple minded (read: stupid) they're just lazy. You certainly aren't simple minded. Why not break it down for people ... or at the very least, don't contribute to the simple mindedness.

They're not as much of an exception as you think. You are in an area that is "in transition." It abuts some of the worst neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Our perception is also skewed by the demographics in this particular city. It's 50% black and better than a third of its population lives below the poverty line. Non-skilled manufacturing jobs dried up and left the area a long time ago and most people with an ounce of initiative fled with those jobs.
High school graduation rates here hover around 50%. Other cities aren't nearly so bad ... they actually have a diverse middle class.

Moreover, even if the good folks are an exception -- if you respect them, they deserve to be distinguished from the corner boys who sell crack and rob and murder people.

I'm not following you? Solution to what? I think the best thing that we can do to address these issues are get behind leaders who will take a tougher approach to policing these communities and talk about things in as racially neutral tone as possible. If someone is a scumbag, they're a scumbag. It has everything to do with their actions, not their race. If people can come to that sort of understanding then they can focus their attentions on the issues and not worry about the motives of the person standing next to them. For instance, you and I have made some similar statements about the ghetto mentality that plagues many in poor urban black communities. It would be nice if I didn't have to wonder whether you were challenging the culture or condeming a whole group of people.
