I really in all seriousness dont know of any Jewish families that live near me..the parade is very small and there arent many people along the route. So noise and accessibility wont be an issue....

And next year Yom Kippur will be on October 8th, that gives you a whole year to think up some other absurd point to bitch about when the parade rolls around next year.

It does bother me a little bit that there seems to be this automatic juxtaposition of German and Jewish as though they were natural opposites or antagonists. Of course, before Hitler there was a very rich heritage of German Judaism, so it strikes me as a little sad that we're not able to reconcile the concepts of being German and Jewish. There are lots of people around whose families are both, aren't there?
To a certain extent, yes, there is a very rich shared cultural heritage. But you can't help Jews from feeling more than a little betrayed by that culture. Thrugh the 1920's German Jews were quite proud of how they had assimilated into German culture and society, only to receive the ultimate "no, you're not welcome here." Thus, while there are a lot of Jews of German decent (as my name attests), the fact that there are about 6 million fewer than there otherwise would be is a hard thing to get over.

My husband is a convert to Orthodox Judaism, and he is of Danish and German ancestry. In fact his 5x great grandfather was a Hessian soldier, born in Maden, Germany, who served in the von Linsingen battalion (unfortunately, as a merc for the Redcoats, alas...). My husband also helps operate an organization for German-American descendants of Hessians who are tracing their genealogy. Can't get much more Deutsch than that!

Yet my husband cannot attend any von Steuben parades (even though he wants to), because they seem to always hold them on Shabbos (Saturday), let alone Yom Kippur. I've noticed that for years...other ethnic groups often hold their parades on Sundays, but the Germans always have them on Saturdays.

Anyone know why that is?

Well, while we're fasting, they'll be celebrating.

And before anyone jumps on Shosh for complaining about this, my husband has felt offended by it for YEARS, but never said anything except to me.

The ORIGINAL Jews of the NE have been decreasing...they were mostly either of the Conservative persuasion, or secular.

However, Rhawnhurst has been INCREASING in Orthodox Jews for a number of years now. Its one reason my family and I moved here. There are many Orthodox groups headquartered here, a number of kosher eateries and stores, and on the whole it is a very active and vibrant Orthodox Jewish community.

Also, there are many Russian Jews living here now, too.

Many of my business associates are Jewish so I'm always aware of an upcoming holiday + I'm used to (and kinda like....) the early cut off times on Fridays. Often times I times I kid my friends about converting just so I can enjoy (what seems to be) the many Jewish holidays and Christmas too.

Can you explain what it is that is offenseive? Is it German parades on a Saturday....or just german celebrations on a saturday near synogogues....

Hell, even I don't know them a year in advance. But I do check if I'm planning or know of a personal or professional event (for example, if I'm scheduling a trial) in September or October.

But you would need that as a Jewish holiday would have an effect on your job...KWIM...It doesnt effect the Holiday or the parade either way.
