It was finally shown on WHYY-TV 12 a couple of years back...

A Google search will tell you more about it. Yes, it was "banned" in Philadelphia!

wylie, i saw 'High School' for the first time in the late 80s at a movie theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. i got to NEHS the year after it was shot, but knew all the faces. later saw it on public television a few years ago, made a tape, and converted it to dvd. without googling, rumor had it that because billy eilberg (son of state senator (or rep?) Eilberg) was in it, they didn't want to embarrass his father. probably, everyone saw it as a bag job and had a fit. if you can get your hands on it (Netflix, perhaps), see it. the opening shot panning down a 'driveway', probably somewhere between Algon and Summerdale, is a classic.

Interesting pix. Strawbridge and Clothier really invested a lot to turn Lits into Clover. Lits is a rectangular box building, S&C added the sloped metal sides all around.

I remember being at the Lits once as a kid and thought it was very dirty. The area was never nice. Safe and practical but never nice.

The Roosevelt Mall is an example of a strip center that sprawled over the years with no thought. It needs to be torn down and redesigned with a more practical footprint, like what happened with the strip center at Levick and Oxford. RM is rather fully rented as is, so there is no incentive for such radical and expensive change. The poorly designed Mayfair Shopping Center has the same issue.

The remainder of Cottman Ave is a motley dysfunctional mix of original street front stores and later car-oriented separated by blacktop from the sidewalk business. As someone who used to try to park once and shop at various businesses, it was always an unpleasant pedestrian experience.

One issue that will prevent Cottman Ave from getting better is a lack of locally owned businesses. It is mostly national chains and hired guy managers that have no incentive to improve the area.

Default Lits

When I was a kid, Lits was like a playground to us. We knew all of the hidden stairways that would take us from floor-to-floor. I remember the stairs going to the top level brought us out by the paperback books. I still have my parent's old metal "charge account" card from Lits!
