Default GOLFERS: How are the NE muni's ?

I've heard horror stories about the condition of Juniata, is it really as bad as people say it is?

How about J.F. Byrne? What kind of shape is it in?

I'm going out Tuesday to play and am trying to stay close to home, but if these courses aren't up to snuff I'll have todrive a bit I suppose.

Byrne is a nice lil course. Its not in perfect shape like a private course but keep this in mind and the fact that its cheap and close by and its a winner.

Default John Byrne

Haven't been to Juniata, but John Byrne is a very quirky little course surrounded by houses. There is water running thru the middle and a surprising number of hills. Greens are not so hot, but layout is interesting and a lot of fun. I think you get 3 par-3s in a row at one point; one is an 80-yard chip shot, and behind the green you'll usually find the homeowner checking out your shot (and making sure it doesn't hit his house, which is only about 100 yards from the tee). Holes 9 and 18 go up a monstrous hill back to the clubhouse and are absolutely brutal; hole 4 (I believe) requires you to blast a drive through a narrow fairway flanked by gigantic trees, and then hit your approach up a side-hill. If your drive is short it goes in the creek; left or right, trees. There are plenty of short par-4s to make up for these tests though!

All in all, an excellent deal for people who don't mind typical municipal conditions.

Thanks for your opins guys. I played Byrne last week and thought it was o.k. All in all the course was in decent shape. Some tee boxes and greens were pretty barren, but other than that it was a good day. They have spent some $ cleaning the place up. Noticed some new treeshave been planted and most holes have yardage markers. It was definitley worth the $26 to walk.

BTW, there's a write up in today's Inquirer about improvements that have recently been made to upgrade Juniata. Still no indoor plumbing, but you have to start somewhere I suppose.

2 other nice courses and that are close by are Bensalem Country Club, which is on par with John F. Byrne's and even better is 5 Ponds Golf Course in Warrington which is right on Street Road. Well kept course with some challenges and doesn't break the bank...
