The market was hit with a cease & desist order by L&I due to the fact that the rules have been changed. ie-original start-up licensing and permit issues were all dealt with prior to opening.....The Ashton Civic Association, who do not want this market to operate (quote for ACA member Larry Gunter; "Flea markets are comprised of a criminal element and we do not want this in our neighborhood. Further, it is only a matter of time before the vendors will start robbing the homes in the neighborhood and begin selling the merchandise at the market. This flea market is a degredation to the neighborhood and we do not want you here."
So, after we did all of our due dilligence and obtained the necessary permits and operating licenses, L&I (through pressure from Denny O'Brien....the one who campaigns on the card that he supports all senior citizens, 33% of who make up the vendors at the olde crown flea market), decided to require us to have a dual zoning permit, currently zoned L-2 which is limited industrial, for L-2 mon-fri and flea market sat-sun, which requires a rezoning hearing, which, lo and behold has to go thru the Ashton Civic Association. This is complete BS, esp given the fact the Phila now ranks as the murder capital of the United States. Currently, I am in the process, with attorney, in averting the cease & desist, but the powers that be are pretty high and mighty and very prejudiced about this market. Ever drive down 2nd street and see all the open air food markets? When I asked L&I about this, the response was, "We don't care about 2nd street". Interesting huh? If you guys are passionate about keeping this market alive, now is the time to make your voices heard. You can email me at jdpileckas@yahoo.com if you like. We will be back. |

Yes it is. I'm surprised old Joanie K didn't have a hand in this as well. It reminds me of the Holmesburg group, with the help of our local pols, shutting down the plans for the Pull-A-Part because of fears that the patrons would come out of the place and start browsing through the neighborhood for car parts.
![]() You have more chance of getting your car stolen or broken into at Franklin Mills, but I don't see anyone protesting that place. Unless someone actually saw something of theirs sitting on a table at the flea, I don't know where they would come up with a case like this. I mean, do they think someone would steal from their house, then go right up the block and display the goods for all to see? ![]() Once again this city finds a way to take away a source of income, as well as a way to purchase the things we need at an affordable price, for those of us who don't have money falling out of our rear ends. Way to help us out...... Good luck Ashton Flea! |

Do any "real" flea markets still exist? I mean the kind where people bring really good "stuff", that is unusual, and not the ones where, you have countless vendors selling the same new merchandise they all seem to get from the same supplier? How many baseball caps does a person need?
