Krajewski changes mind,
will run again

City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski has been reconsidering her earlier retirement announcement for some time.
Krajewski (D-6th dist.) entered the city’s Deferred Retirement Option Program in 2004, announcing at the time that she would not seek an eighth four-year term this year.
After careful consideration, the councilwoman has come to a decision.
"I’m going to run," she said.
Krajewski, 72, won’t hold a news conference or rally to formally announce her decision. She doesn’t much care for politicians who hold media events every time they come up with a new idea.
Instead, she and her supporters will simply circulate nominating petitions, beginning Feb. 13. The primary is scheduled for May 15.
Krajewski’s decision will no doubt delight Bob Dellavella, Frank Conaway, Lorri Bednarek and Marge Tartaglione — the ward leaders in her district with whom she is particularly close.
The councilwoman, who lives in Mayfair, is running again after receiving backing from numerous constituents.
"I like representing them," she said. "I enjoy the job. There’s a lot more to do."
Krajewski, a member of Philadelphia magazine’s "Best of Philly" Hall of Fame, wants to help develop the North Delaware Avenue waterfront and continue overseeing the popular Community Life Improvement Program.
In addition, she plans a series of hearings at the 8th Police District to address concerns by the Mayfair Community Development Corporation and neighbors about absentee and slum landlords. A Municipal Court judge will preside, and landlords will be forced to prove they have the proper licenses and permits.
The lawmaker also wants to make the city safer by hiring more police officers and fully funding the district attorney’s budget.
While Krajewski will likely be unopposed in the primary, she will be busy supporting Bob Brady’s likely bid for the Democratic mayoral nomination. She’ll hold a fund-raiser for him on Jan. 29 at the Water Works Restaurant and Lounge.
One possible Republican candidate is Mayfair Civic Association president Scott Cummings. However, it’s not certain the GOP will work hard to beat Krajewski because she is close to state Rep. John Perzel, a Republican ward leader in the district.
Under DROP, a retirement-incentive program open to city employees, Krajewski — who underwent surgery for removal of non-cancerous polyps near her esophagus in 2005 — was going to receive a lump sum of $270,000. That money will go back into her pension.
Tartaglione, 73, a longtime city commissioner from Oxford Circle who also signed up for DROP, will run in the spring primary, too. She is seeking a ninth four-year term. ••
