Charles Dougherty Served in Congress and State Senate
My constituent Charles Dougherty served in the State Senate (1972-1978) and the U.S. Congress (1979-2002). He was a leading critic of Republican leader William Meehan, and just narrowly defeated Rep. Dennis O'Brien for the Republican Congressional nomination in 1980, before losing narrowly to Bob Borski for re-election in 1982.
The founder or co-founder of the Pro Life Caucus in the U.S. house, Dougherty lost because of intense opposition from many in the Irish community, who strongly disagreed with Dougherty's intense opposition to the Irish Republican Army. Dougherty's agreements with the National Rifle Association and his opposition to tougher governmental regulation of used car sales were key issues used against him.
Now in his late 60's, Dougherty has made numerous attempts at a political comeback, losing to Borski repeatedly and also being defeated for the Republican mayoral nomination in 1983, the Republican Congressional nomination in 1984, and as a Republican nominee for City Council at large in 1995. He is a man of principle, decency, and integrity who would certainly be a credible and interesting mayoral candidate in 2007.
