Is this the article you're referring to? If so, it only says that DeWeese is the democratic nominee- not that he was elected to the position..yet.
I believe the republicans also get a nominee. This is why there is so much speculation that Perzel could actually be re-elected as speaker. I could be wrong, but this article doesn't say DeWeese was elected. House Democrats choose majority leadership Speaker-designate DeWeese says electorate wanted change HARRISBURG, Dec. 5 -- Following last week’s victory in the 156th District in Chester County, the 102 incoming members of the House Democratic Caucus today held a reorganization meeting to select their majority leadership team for the 2007-08 legislative session. As expected, Rep. Bill DeWeese was chosen by his colleagues as the Democratic nominee for Speaker of the House. He last served as speaker during the 1993-94 session and has been minority leader since 1995. “Today’s gathering was convened so that we can meet the wishes of voters across the Commonwealth who decided November 7 that they want a Democratic majority to lead the state House of Representatives,” DeWeese said. “While our margin is just one seat, in fact this year’s election saw the largest change of seats from one party to the other since 1978 and represents a call for change from the past 12 years of Republican leadership.” Joining DeWeese on the Democratic leadership team are Majority Leader Keith McCall, Whip Mark Cohen, Caucus Chairman Frank Dermody, Policy Committee Chairman Todd Eachus, Administrator Dan Surra, Secretary Phyllis Mundy and Appropriations Committee Chairman Dwight Evans. “House Democrats are ready to work with Governor Ed Rendell in promoting a progressive agenda for Pennsylvania’s families and businesses,” McCall said. Mundy, who joined the House in 1990, is the third woman to serve in House Democratic Leadership. The first was Mary Varallo, who represented the 4th District in Philadelphia County and served as Democratic Caucus chairman from 1957-58. She was the first woman to serve as a committee chairman, caucus chairman, minority and majority whip. Coincidentally, Marion Munley, who also represented the 4th District when it was moved to Lackawanna County, served as Democratic Caucus secretary during the 1963-64 session. In accordance with the state Constitution, DeWeese said swearing-in day for the full 203-member House will be held on the first Tuesday of the year, Jan. 2.
