Default Pet Help

Hey,
Looking for someone in "the know". Santa is supposed to be bringing my little one a kitty cat for X-mas this year, only Santa's elf (that would be me) is having a problem finding one. I need a baby, preferrably a Persian or Angora, female, declawed and house broken (if at all possible). Anybody know how/where I can find such a thing? I'd rather NOT go through a pet store.
Thanks in advance.

Declawing is cruel...mmmkay?

http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...=cat+declawing

Very easy to just clip them with toe nail clippers every couple of weeks. Or cover the pointy parts http://www.softpaws.com/

As far as house broken, cats use litter boxes instictively, no training required. Just throw them in it once when you first bring them home and they're house broken. Of course, declawing sometimes leads to avoidance of litter boxes because the litter irritates the bloody stumps.

Please try to go to a shelter to get a kitty there are SO MANY kittens and cats that need homes. I know some pet supply stores actually have animals for adoption in the stores certain days of the week.

Every Petco I've ever been to has kitties for adoption every day. (You can check their website to make sure the location near you has 'em.) They also do special adoption days where they bring in loads more animals.

I believe Petsmart does the same thing.

I have a cat from the SPCA, I hate that cat. Its like a wild animal despite my best efforts to socialize it and love it. My opinion on animals is never to rescue, never pick an animal up from the pound, never take in a stray. You don't know what you're getting and it can be a hassle at best and a liability at worst. Its much better to find a reputable breeder and purchase an animal whose parents you can meet and observe (as well as uncles, brothers, and sisters.) When an animal is raised in a loving home from birth (and it will if its a good breeder) then it gets the good start it needs. Not to mention good breeders will breed for temperament and other physical and health issues that will keep you pet stable and of good constitution. This is the safest way to get a quality animal that's likely to be what you're looking for and expecting.

I keep saying "good" breeder and that's because there are of course "bad" breeders, so do your homework. If you're trying to pick up a gift real quick before Christmas you're going about this the wrong way in my opinion. Then again, if you want to put in the extra effort and roll the dice just buy from a pet store or a shelter.

All you fruity rescuers can f-off, btw.

Aww Mr C, I have a wild animal of my own and even with his faults I believe he was sent to us for a reason...we rescued his momma and his two sibling kitties and he has that wildness about him.....but he loves us and we love him...especially this past weekend when he brought me a present! Mwhuahahahaha! Poor little mousie!

I just cant see buying a cat when there are literally thousands waiting for homes in the area.
Petfinder.com has lots of kitties too!

This is a great post. We just recently were catnapped. No sh*t, some woman pulled up in her car and stole my cat. Well we moved on with told the kids that the cat was taken by a dear sweet ol lady who was lonely and she was goin to take great care of her. Well we moved recently and still have one cat who we swore we would not let out well the man opens the door and poof off goes my other cat into the night. I was so sick over this, Thanksgiving week and no Papa Jade around my feet as I cook. We went to Paca and the spca and to all the animal doctors in the area, with no luck. All curled up Sunday after a fun weekend of cleaning up a mess and trying to locate a box with some sort of Christmas decor ( needless to say we still havent gotten all our boxes unpacked) I hear a knock on my front door, My dear friend Mayfair chick says whoo hoo I have something for you, she opens my door and low and behold its Jade in a cat carrier. 6 days gone and 7 blocks away my Jade traveled to our old house. The weather was horrible and he was a tad thin but was so happy to be home. I teared up and hugged my cat and my friend who brought my lap buddy back. Cats are very pushy bossy and sometimes very demanding but they are the best pets in the world. JAde was a stray that was found over 8 years ago and would be greatly missed if we never saw him again. Thanks MC you gave me the best Christmas present ever, you gave me my Jadey back.

Sorry you had bad luck with your SPCA-cat. Cats are funny creatures...they do what THEY want to do when THEY want to do it. If you're used to dogs, you'll be mystified by cats. Does the cat get along with your girlfriend? It's not unusual for a cat to have a "favorite" person in a household.

My very first cat came from the SPCA, but my experience was quite different from yours. He was a beautiful black cat with big yellow eyes. He's in Kitty Heaven now, but I loved him dearly. All I had to do was look at him, and he'd start purring. I still miss him <sigh>.

Cats #2 and #3 are also black with yellow eyes. They're from the same litter (one longhair, one shorthair) and were found in my son's friend's back yard. Have had them since they were teeny-tiny kittens, and they're spoiled rotten.

Cat #4 was purchased at a pet store by my son's ex-girlfriend for her sister. After about a year, her parents didn't want the cat in the house anymore...so long story short, the cat came to live with me. A little monkey of a cat, gray with a white tummy and paws. Looks like a little mountain lion. She's spoiled rotten too.

Sincerely, A-Fruity-Cat-Rescuer

Default SPCA - no contest

I can highly recommend SPCA animals. You'll have no more/less trouble than you will with a cat from a breeder. You'll be saving a cat that didn't ask to be born from being euthanized. All of my cats except one (and he was a stray) came from a shelter and we were thrilled by all of them.

One other option is to check with the local vet and/or groomer. they frequently know of families with pregnant animals or new litters.

my advice:

1) take time with the cats at the shelter before you pick one. See which ones respond to you. it's like people - chemistry is everything.

2) SPAY / NEUTER the d*mned thing as soon as they recommend it. we have no shortage of "wild" / unwanted cats and dogs around here and we don't need any more!

3) I have to vote *with* the declawing fan club. Makes for a much more compatible living arrangement, and frankly i've never seen that it causes any significant trauma to the animal. Get it done when you're having kitty neutered. they're getting anesthesia for that anyway and will already be feeling like crap when they wake up.

4) consider getting the smartchip implanted. the SPCA does it for a fee and if your kitty ever hits the street and is picked up by animal control they'll find you. most places have the readers now.

Good luck! A cat is a great addition to the house and a chance to teach caring and nurturing to a child.
