Default Bakery in Mayfair

I lived in Mayfair for years but now live in Illinois. We are having a baby shower in Philly for my daughter soon and I will be buying our pound cake at Geigers on Frankford Avenue. The only place I have ever had pound cake that matches Geigers is Stocks. I am drooling just thinking about a real pound cake. The mid west does not know what they are missing.

Love Geiger's, but... Stocks. Oh, yeah. I just had theirs for the first time (my new neighbor formerly from Kensington South brought me one. I like her!) OMG, that was good. I'll be going back to Stocks.

Isgro's though, did our wedding cake after we searched high and low and tasted everywhere. We needed an excellent lemon pound cake. A) My in-laws had lemon at their wedding, so tradition and B) It was being served AS dessert. I've always thought it was a waste when the cake is an afterthought and goes home in little wax bags...

Tell you what, it was EXCELLENT. Completely custom design and the best lemon pound I've ever eaten. Their ricotta cake-- my wife does the pilgrimage to Isgro's for my birthday every year, I LOVE it. She comes home with a few of their hand-filled cannolis, too. They're the best.

Now I'm hungry.

Oh, thanks. I thought it was much further south on Broad. Too close, it's in walking distance. T-R-O-U-B-L-E!

Default try these stores

There are actually a couple of bakeries that are good. One, Holmesburg, was already mentioned. They have the best strawberry shortcake around.

Geigers, located at Frankford and Unruh, has really good pound cake. Not as dense as Stocks, but very tasty. In Feasterville, there is a little place on Bustleton Pike called Sketchlie's (not so sure about the spelling). Very good cake.

Shenk's Bakery in Fox Chase is pretty good, as well.

I agree with your opinion of Rillings. Never sure what you'll get. My wife bought a strawberry shortcake (think I like those?), and the berries were bad, the whipped cream turned sour and the cake was old.

Thanks, Geno.

Every Philadelphian should go to Isgro's at least once. It's well worth the trip. Have the ladies fill ya a cannoli while you're there. Chocolate chip. Eat it in the car. Heaven.
