Question Parkwood Manor

Anybody out there live in Parkwood? I've been there 4 years and just wondering what anyone's thoughts are on homes, quality of life, etc.

Default A long time ago in a neighborhood far, far away...

I haven't been back there since my Dad passed away a couple of years ago, but my family moved out of South Philly to the "Greater Northeast" to a brand new house in Parkwood Manor in the early 60's. You knew everybody who lived on your street. I went to the first year at Stephen Decatur School and played Little League baseball over on Dunks Ferry Rd. The "Unknown Boy" used to buried in the Potter's Field there. I remember when the 7-11 opened (we thought Slurpees were just a new twist on water ice) Liberty Bell racetrack where Franklin Mills is now. As kids we could collect returnable bottles in a wagon, take them to the A&P (Byberry & Academy), get enough money to buy candy and get in to see the Saturday matinee at the Parkwood Theatre and not have to worry about the wagon still being right where we left it unlocked outside the movie. I guess things can change a lot over time, but my Dad despite complaining that "things just aint the same around here" stayed for 40 years.

Go drive around Parkwood.

It's a middle class section. Notthing spectacular...nothing too horrible.

Parking can be a challenge even though it looks like a suburb.

How so? Most of the rowhouses around there seem to have a driveway and garage on the front of them.

They're putting in a new Wawa across the street. That will hurt the sev there, it's dumpy these days.

When Parkwood was conceived and built, the average family owned one car. These days, most garages are unuseable to park cars and each household probably averages 2-3 cars.

As for the Wawa killing the 7-11, I have no doubt. Wawa has recently expanded down here to Virginia Beach and 7-11 hates them. gottahavawawa!

Parkwood always had the reputation of being the "Kensington of the North East". The 7-11 was a hub for a lot of QOL crime. I don't know if it changed recently, but that was what how it was characterized.

It wasn't designed well.

as mentioned people use their garages for storage..park over the sidewalk and that leaves one street spot per 2 houses.

Duh, that makes sense. I have family on a cul de sac up there, and now that I think about it, it is always hard to find a spot because of those curb cut outs.
I also use my behind the house garage for storage, and never put my car in it.

Did they put a new El line in Parkwood I'm unaware of? Please elaborate. Assuming you meant this in a negative way, I don't really see the comparison between Hyman Korman's rowhome utopia in the FAR NE and "The K" .
