Usually over 50% of the time it's because the skydiver failed to exercize caution, did not respond to a malfunction properly, was using high-speed equipment that the skydiver is not trained to handle, or did not correctly execute a proper landing sequence under a parachute that he or she could have landed normally.
'Scuse me, are you saying the parachute didn't open?

In the accident at CrossKeys earlier this month? No, both parachutes opened.

The first one opened as a mal which the instructor cut away.

Parachutes not opening almost never happen. If you have an AAD in your rig and it is switched on, you will have SOMETHING over your head even if you do not deploy your main.

The second one deployed into a horseshoe malfunction.

The different types of malfunctions that occur in skydiving

USPA Safety Statistics

Malfunctions are classified into two types. Total malfunctions, the safest type of malfunction to deal with--is a complete failure of your deployment bag to open. 99% of the time this is because of a Pilot Chute In Tow malfunction.

A PCIT mal you usually wait in freefall for a little bit to see if the pilot chute will clear... if it does not then follow the skydiver creed "When in doubt, whip it out." (pull the reserve ripcord)

The other type of malfunction, Partial malfunctions, are more trickier and you must follow memorized procedures for dealing with the mal.

Those would be line twists, a line over your canopy, two canopies out, cells in your canopy that won't inflate, a break or tear in your main canopy, etc.

Those mals you deal with them by performing procedures to clear the mal, and test to see if you can fly the canopy and flare it properly. The initial training for learning how to operate a canopy takes about 8-10 hours of training, watching videos, and tests and practice exercises with your instructor. But... even if you only get classroom training for a few days, you stay prepared dealing with mals everyday you skydive--for the rest of your life.

Quite obnoxious. I remember one story where he said that overpopulation was a myth and that we have plenty of space in America that's unused, and with today's mega-crops and super-science we could easily expand indefinitely. I hate that guy.
You are absolutely correct. Travel ten minutes out of any overpopulated metropolitan area and all's you find are ........ one-hundred story buildings, traffic jams, too many people ..... well in Euphrata Pennsylvania and Bird-In-Hand Pennsylvania anyway. OVERCROWDED everywhere!

Heck there's almost no room for quilts anymore .......

Not good enough for me. I do not care, ....
opened, didn't open ...... I want to know
that I will float down not the other ......

So are we playing with words? Opened,
didn't open ... makes me no nevermind ........

Default Enforcement of No Attack Rule Would Expand Phillyblog Growth

Phillyblog is ever-growing, with nearly 9700 members as I write this.

More vigorous enforcement of the no-attack rule would encourage even greater participation than now occurs. Civility is an important condition of dialogue, and a good number of message board communities have died or fallen into disuse because of a large number of personal attacks.

Civility eh? As George Carlin puts it we are barely "out of the jungle."

"When you get right down to it human beings are nothing more than ordinary jungle beasts. Savages. No different from the Cro Magnon people who lived twenty five thousand years ago. No different. Our DNA hasn't changed substantially in a houndred thousand years. We're still operating out of the lower brain. The reptilian brain.Fight of flight. Kill or be killed. We like to think we've evolved and advanced because we can build a computer, fly an airplane, travel underwater, we can write a sonet, paint a painting, compose an opera. But you know something? We're barely out of the jungle on this planet. Barely out of the Fing jungle. What we are, is semi-civilized beasts, with baseball caps and automatic weapons."

I'll second that.
Thanks Brooke, sometimes I don't have the time or attention span to read through all these threads.

There would be more involvement if this blog was not overrun by feel-good liberals.
