Default The old Devon Theater

Quote:
Community group has
its eye on the Devon

Before discussing community concerns about the WOW Family Fun Center, the Mayfair Civic Association last week heard some good news about the neighborhood.
Reese Hartey, president of the Mayfair Community Development Corporation, announced that his group expects to purchase the vacant Devon Theater.
The sale is possible thanks to a grant from state House Speaker John Perzel (R-172nd dist.).
The theater, at Frankford Avenue and Stirling Street, has been vacant since November 2000.
One interested buyer was a food market, but neighbors opposed the sale because of a lack of parking.
Hartey is unsure about the future of the site. He’d like to bring cultural activities to the theater. One other possibility is to tear down the structure to create a Philadelphia Parking Authority lot.
Tearing it down for a parking lot is a stupid idea. Frankford Ave. in Mayfair is a walkable, public trans. - friendly area. I think it would be fabulous to use it for some sort of cultural activity and kep the fabric of the area in tact. Actually improve it.

Devon should be a landmark! Everyone that grew up in the NE went there at some point. I remember seeing Braveheart and many other moveis there. Good old Perzel at it again trying to take over something. God is that guy ever so slippery yet people love him. He is basically trying to take over everything using his power in the state so he and his buddies can go to town.

It had not so recent movies for a dollar. Also, I believe it was an adult theater at one point, hence people refering to it as "the stick to the floor Devon"

My first date was at the Devon! I think it was the movie Breakin'. Back then it was 99 cents. They uped it to a dollar because all us kids were throwing our extra pennies through the screen! I think the Devon, Mayfair, Castor and the Benner Theaters make up about 75% of my childhood memories. Nothing like your feet stick to the floors!

How about the Merben? It was on Frankford Ave. just south of the Mayfair. It later became the Concord Roller Rink. I never went to the Benner. Where exactly was that?

I used to go to the Concord skating rink right up until it became The Electric Playground. I'm not sure if I remember the Merben, maybe before my time? The Benner was on Rising Sun or Castor Ave. I was so young, my sister worked there at the concession stand, I used to get in for free, I loved it! I saw Goonies every night it was there, same with Silverado and countless others. Growing up on Sheffield at Torresdale, The Mayfair was my home base. I couldn't even begin to count the memories.........

Default Performing Arts

Two weeks ago, I called Mayfair CDC when I saw the dumpsters outside and men working. They told me they hoped to use it for "Performing Arts".

I know that the Lion Theater (liontheater.org) and its related groups wish to use it, but as of last night The Lion hasn't heard anything. I also know of a couple of guys who hope to do movies there on a regular basis.

Right now the Mayfair CDC does seem to see that it should have more value as a regional entertainment draw rather than as a surface parking lot, but I don't think they are entirely convinced of that yet.

Welcome to the board Scoats. Hopefully the performing arts thing will succeed. I hear there's already a great bar on that part of Frankford Ave.

Don't forget The Tyson...it's a shame The Devon couldn't morph into something like what The Keswick has become.
