Default Frankford Transportation Center

So, I'm not from the northeast, and in fact this was as far into the northeast as I'v ventured in years. But I wanted to see the Frankford Transportation Center. Looks nice. will be esp nice if they really do a a metro market, dunkin donuts, et al in there. very clean and open. I walked around a bit. Seems a bit downtrodden but looked nice in a lot of ways. aside from the cabbies yelling at each other and fighting, the bum that hassled me, and the the thriftway that greets you with bars, the houses looked nice. I hope the area recovers. The Thriftway store, though lacking IMO in selection, was kind of neat in design. I bought a donut and left.

el, you're welcome in the Northeast anytime. Just tell 'em Geno sent you. I must admit that with being gone so much I haven't been to the new transportation center. Although my house is 10 minutes from it I haven't even driven by. I haven't used the Frankford el since last summer just before it opened. It was a zoo then with all the bus lines all over Frankford and Bustleton Aves. Is the supermarket in the terminal? I was in town some this past week by the way and I went to a bar at Frankford & Harbison (a few blocks north of the terminal) that serves all the Philadelphia area micro brews. Yards, Flying Fish etc. I don't think too many places do that in the NE. The place is called the Grey Lodge. Good bar, but they really need more food. All they had was tomato pie. I did notice some patrons bringing in wings from the pizza place next door though.

FTC is nice right now...let's see how long it stays that way. Moving the tracks off the Avenue makes it look like a whole new street.

Geno, the Thriftway is across the street from the terminal...SE corner of Frankford & Pratt.

I have not been to the Grey Lodge but it has a good reputation amongst us beerpeople. I hope for the best for the NE. perhaps someday people will spend more time near FTC instead of always driving to franklin mills.

No kidding. That area has great potential. Actually it was was a thriving place before the beginning of the suburban explosion of the 50's. Some are trying to revive things. They just had the annual Franford Arts Festival recently. I believe it's a fairly new event. Anyone know anything about it? I'm hoping it takes no more than a decade or so for the revitalization effort to get from Fishtown to Frankford.

Here's a story from the city paper. I believe this was the first one.

http://citypaper.net/articles/051800...rankford.shtml

Here's mention of this years from the News Gleaner:

Frankford Festival's dedication recognizes past, focuses on future

By: Brady Hicks 05/27/2004

The fifth annual Frankford Arts Festival carried special meaning last weekend as residents, workers, and government officials celebrated Frankford's 150th anniversary as a part of the city.

It also provided a backdrop for the dedication of SEPTA's new Frankford Transportation Center at Bridge Street and Frankford Avenue.
"Finally the lights are on in Frankford," said SEPTA General Manager Faye Moore. "We are no longer standing in the shadows of Philadelphia."
Once described as "the crown jewel of the SEPTA system" by Dr. Irving Smiler, the late president of the Bridge and Pratt Business and Professional Association, the terminal currently serves over 50,000 commuters daily. That is more than the equivalent to sold-out Phillies game.
"It took a while, but it was worth it," said former U.S. Rep. Robert A. Borski Jr. "This terminal used to be like the city's ugly stepchild, and dangerous. Now it has been made beautiful and pretty, bringing nothing but sunshine down on Frankford."
Frankford Group Ministry executive director and Frankford resident Rev. Robin Hynicka, said: "Between 1912 and 1922 when the rapid transit system here was established, it helped connect the Frankford community with the rest of its neighbors."
Holding up a copy of the site plans for the terminal, a document that included over 20 pages of input from Frankford residents, Mr. Hynicka continued: "Everything on this site plan is what was constructed here. But it's not the papers that matter, it's the voice of the people. It's their pride. Residents of Frankford have shown that they care by continuing to force improvements in their community and demand excellence from this terminal's construction.
"The elevated train before us here is an outward sign of our elevated spirits. It shows the city what it means to be 'Frankford Friendly,'" he said.
"This is your project," said Federal Transportation Authority official Howard Shipman of the $150 million project. "The people of Frankford faced all of the issues successfully, making it truly a job well done. Uncle Sam and the feds are proud to have been a part of this project."
The Project Management Institute used the dedication to honor the project's managers with the Delaware Valley award for their efficiency during the nine-day window in early 2004 when critical El tracks were removed and new ones were prepared for service.
"Considering a Phillies stadium (sized-crowd) comes here every day, officials on this Frankford Transportation Center project are to be commended," said PMI's Gary Sonin, "The project's local information team were able to almost seamlessly shuttle all the commuters to other terminals during the entire nine-day outage. It is amazing."
Besides this dedication ceremony, the Frankford Arts Festival also included a calendar of events with entertainment, food, and walking tours of the area.
All of the speakers from the dedication joined the Irish American String Band in parading down Frankford much as their 1922 counterparts had done when the El was built 82 years before.

Gene:

Interesting articles. Old City hasn't been an arts district for years. It's an arts business district (they claim it is a cultural district).

Unfortunately, the last of the artists were moving out about the time I moved in in 1990. And now, even the artist-owned galleries have, for the most part, been forced out by high rents and chichi new residents.

It's such an old pattern. Aritsts, followed by good folks, followed by the bankers and the stock brokers. I give your neighborhood about twenty years.

I grew up 3 blocks from the FTC. I moved out of there about 5 years ago and just made my way back there last week.

Holy crap! It's a whole new street. I honestly didn't even recognize it.

Let's hope the neighborhood surrounding it recovers. Right now anything south of the FTC is a drug haven. But there are still a ton of nice homes in Northwood.

PWalk, welcome to the Forum. Did you move out of the Northeast altogether?
