Has anyone seen those "Stop Philly Gun Violence" commercials?
How can people sign a petition when they dont know what laws the city will enact? |

Been wondering about this myself. The point of the petition is to "allow Philly to write its own gun laws." They don't say what *kind* of gun laws, but this group has to have some sort of inclination one way or the other right?
Anyone have any more info -- without getting into a debte on gun control, etc.? |

I emailed him, bringing up my concern over the vagueness of the website and the TV ads.
In his response, he alluded to restricting peoples' ability to purchase multiple guns. He did not give me a straightforward answer on how he feels about gun permits and therefore I will not be voting for him. The petition and the website are a joke. He is unwilling or unable to explain just how he will curb gun violence. Hey, jackass - the laws are on the books. Try enforcing them. Try keeping people behind bars who deserve it the most. |

I figured it was aimed at curbing people from buying multiple handguns (as in the case of Jarad Tomline who purchased 6 handguns....one of which was used by Cletus C. Rivera to gun down Reading PO Scott Wertz) but fiddling with the CCW permits gets my blood pressure up. On a side note, about the CCW, I went last friday down to get my permit renewed....because its up in December. Unfortunately I was too early and was told to come back in October ....a full two months before it expires. Good thing I already had the day off (they are open from 830am to 230pm...HAHA) so I wasnt put out but now I have to make two more trips downtown....one for the renewal and one to pickup the permit.Patience is a virtue. |

Sadly Tom Knox and the rest of the anti-gun lobby he's backing don't have a clue when it comes to curbing gun violence. They were recently in front of PA lawmakers and I caught the session on PCN. The female speaker for the group could do nothing more than quote out an obviously preformatted book sitting in front of her whenever asked a question. When asked a direct question she would constantly re-read her schpiel from the book which only begged for more questions.
At no time in her speech did she provide anything specific to back their claim that a majority of shootings in Philly in recent years was directly due to people buying more than one gun a month which is their initial aim. To prevent people from buying more than one a month. You have to wonder where they would go next when the tide of shootings continues unabated even if they got their way. Factually, most shootings in Philly involve older guns owned by the shooter for a length of time, guns stolen in burglaries, and guns traded by drug users in return for drugs. A very, very small number are found to have been alleged recent "straw" purchases. As a gun owner, I don't have a need to buy more than one gun in month and have bought only one in the last 2 years as most gun owners do other than collectors. My problem with this one a month proposal is that it will accomplish nothing in relation to stop the tide of violence other than stopping law abiding Pa-vanians from exercising their rights while illegal gun holders continue to do what they always do. I sort of compare the one a month rule to the redlight cameras on the Blvd. Putting the lights there prevented the "majority" of law abiding citizens from going through the red lights and getting the $100 tickets in the mail. The "minority" still insists on getting caught on camera going through the red-light. These people are equivalent to people not entitled to carry a firearm on the street legally, but doing so anyway, even though it's totally illegal. There is a simple solution to catching straw purchasers that seems to get overlooked. Every time you go to a gun dealer to buy a handgun, a backround check is done while you wait. How much would it cost for the computers used for these checks to flag a person's name when it picks up a pattern of multiple gun purchases in a short time span?? The answer is it would cost no more than the Knox proposal would. Maybe less. The bottom line is that Phila Judges must start to be held accountable for their actions in court. Too many judges are afraid of sentencing defts. to the mandatory 5 year sentence for carrying a gun illegally in this city. A basic gun arrest usually consists of 3 criminal charges that are directly related to one another. Can't charge one without the others, yet judges routinely drop or find defts not guilty of the most serious charge, yet guilty of the 2 others. Legitimately, you shouldn't have that as the outcome since the most serious charge directly causes the others to happen or not, yet it happens EVERY day in our Criminal justice system. An example: Someone commits a robbery by gun. He's convicted of the armed robbery, but found not guilty of possession of a gun on city streets. Huhhhhhh????? Add your thoughts............ |

Looking at the point that the guns used in crimes presently are older guns that had once belonged to law abiding citizens, and were stolen will bring up the debate that any firearm purchased presently up the road will end up the same way. I totally agree with you, but have come up against that resistance from people who want to disarm what it seems to be every Philadelphian except the creeps. Criminal mentality. It's not going to change. They'll keep doing like they do, and some poor soul who needs to protect their family, and home will be screwed. I'm going to see if I get a response. Thanks for that inofrmation on PCN. I would have been interested to see that. |

great points Knights.. The best way to lower handgun crime is to make the judges responsible for the decisions they make like this.. But thats too hard. they have too much power and are mostly untouchable. The one gun a month will not do much. Millions of guns are already out there and many have been stolen and have gone 'underground' for crime purposes..
