Question ¿Dónde puedo encontrar un buen taco en Philadelphia?

Is this whole city devoid of good tacos/taquerias? I'm sorry but where I come from texmex, fresh mex, and taco bell are scoffed at.

Where can I get a delicious carne asada taco with cilantro and onion topped with lime juice and served with fresh hot sauce? How about a spicy pollo torta? Or maybe some tender pork carnitas? Authentic Mexican food!

I'm starving for one of these, I'd eat at a taqueria about twice a week at least before I came here. But instead of taquerias there's pizza and hoagie shops on every corner (which are not without their own merit.) I don't need a taqueria on every corner just location of ONE good one to get my fix!

Busca en Avenida Castor, Avenida Oxford y Avenida Washington.

I agree, though. I have yet to find Mexican food in Philly that's on the same level as what you'd find near the border (probably unsurprisingly). My favorite mexican place that I've tried so far is probably Taco Riendo at 5th & Thompson (1 block north of Girard). The one a couple blocks away at Lawrence & Girard is also supposed to be good, but I haven't eaten there yet (prices are 2 or 3x what they are at Taco Riendo... they're also both owned by the same person, I believe).

Mr. Califonia,
It's apparent you are quite unhappy with Philadelphia. Every one of your posts is complaining about Philadelphia and how it's different than California. Well, the fact is that Philly is NOT California. While you may be having difficulty accepting that, come winter you'll get a real education and you'll have all manner of things to bitch and whine about.
I've been to California countless times and don't live there because I don't like it. One thing among many I don't like about California is the whininess of the people there. I live in Philly because I DO like it here.
I might suggest to you that your obvious dislike of Philly and inability to enjoy the city can be accommodated at the Philadelphia International Airport. It's just a short trip by taxi (you won't have to deal with Philly drivers, but I'm sure you'll have plenty to whine about with Philly cabbies), and you'll be gone and your suffering will be over.

One other thing you should know about Philly, so you can add it to your list of complaints: There are no avocado trees here.

Mr C- funny you brought up the point about having pizza and hoagie shops on every other corner in philly. And that in cali you have alot of mexican food joints that serve real good mexican food. One reason for that might be that the Italians came by way of New York and havent crossed the usa yet and the mexicans came straight up to california and havent treked this far yet. I've never actually had food from a real mexican restaurant before probably because there are so few if any in these parts. If you find one, by all means, let us know.

Oh, and as far as whining and complaining......... whine on, if in fact thats what you are doing..

If everyone who had a complaint or whined about something in Philly, moved out...... you'd have 3 of my neighbors, the deaf guy at K&A, my grandmom and her goldfish left in Philly. hmmmmm not good. Maybe Oyst was just on the rag today.

Ironically, your entire post was one big nagging whine about whining, peppered with brilliant insights like "Philly is NOT California."

In any case, all my posts have been either about how much I love the city or questions about where things are or what the rules are. While you may think that I blindly stumbled naked out of the mountains and wandered into Philadelphia only to make it my mission to irk you with my questions; the truth is I choose to live here after exploring up and down the East and West coast. I love the city, I love the people, and phillybloggers have been an excellent resource and extremely helpful with adjusting to our new home.

(You could of just said you didn't know where a taqueria is.) Keep up the razor sharp insight...

Regards,

-- mr c

I might just have to open up a taqueria, only I don't know if the market is here for one.

Exclamation Speak English

You best not go ordering at Geno's with all that Spanish Mr. C.

Oyster Mick was making a point. You say he could just have answered yes or no. Maybe you could have asked in English, and not be upset of our lack of all things Mexican.

Maybe head to the barrio. There used to a Mexican place in Olde City years ago. People loved it. I couldn't say either way as I'd only get a flan there. It maybe moved to another location.

Can you make a taco without too much trouble? Plenty of GOYA products in the store.

Guacamole though Mick I'd enjoy an avocado. We do have fig trees though.
Can help you out there. Heck, go for it. Open up a business for Mexican I would believe you'd make out well. There's got to be someplace. Maybe try on the South Philly section. It is a rotten feeling having that craving, and not being able to get what you need. Hopefully SP can help.

Default Los Panchitos

There is Los Panchitos Taqueria at Bridge & Summerdale in Oxford Circle. They are very authentic, guacamole is awesome, huge burritos and on the weekends they have pasole (sp?) soup (hominy & stewed roasted pork). Take-out only.

you mean in the northeast, or philadelphia as a whole? because the market is DEFINITELY here in the city as a whole; i don't know about the northeast (although i do know at least one part-mexican family living up off adams ave that would probably come close to keeping you in business by themselves). look at all the places down in south philly, or the ones that dave mentioned up there. they're all doing well.

as far as good tacos, i like taqueria la veracruzana, 9th & washington.
