And this is why you should donate to PACCA, not PETA:

In September, PETA made headlines in Vermont and across the nation for asking
Ben & Jerry's ice cream to use human breast milk in their ice cream, instead of cow milk

OK whatever. But as a native Calfornian (where I was in the mid '90's) when I get a hankering for the real deal in Philly thats where I go. City Search reviews below with an exterior picture - Interior could be larger but with deep orange walls and a couple of nice rusic touches. Go for the food not the location. Like I said the best mole I've ever had and thats compared to a lot of restaurants and an ex-girlfriend for whom the mole was the prized family recipe. Its where I go when I have that itch that Mr. California seemed to grousing about. My gal was floored at the quality of the food for the price and we had just got back from a trip back to the Bay Area and around CA where I dragged her to to a lot of my favorite spots so she had something recent to compare it to.

Cheaper. More like a "nice" family-run joint. Stonger flavors. Oaxacan style is especially about the rich flavors. To my mind easily on par in terms of quality but more of a "authentic" family-run restaurant. Your mileage may differ.

seand, with all due respect, I think it woudl be a madre y padre place. las cazuelas is good, althogh it's not really my style of mexican. I had family living in mexico for a long time and not all mexican food is good so mexicans eating it doesn't mean it's good. still, I give my respect to them. the best mexican restaurants I've been to were hole in the wall mom and pops. in texas we used to frequent a mexican butcher shop that had a restaurant on the side...phenomenal. they even decided that authentic mexican tough meat was something they could do without. (yes, tough meat is authentic).

Yeah I was just at a little Carniceria in the San Joaquin Valley town of Madera Ca that is kind of like what you are describing. Like a you can pick up a can of La Morena salsa, 1/2 apound of tripe and oh we have a little taqueria on the side. Awesome al pastor pork tacos.

Yeah its not "authentic" in that way - go to South Philly or maybe someplace in agricultural South Jersey that I don't know about yet for that. Its a passably "fancy" family-run restaurant, not a divey 2 person run greasy spoon. I agree they are different animals. Sill in its class, Las Cazuelas is pretty damn "authentic" for the type of place it is. I happen to like the richer, saucier Oaxacan style too, myself, I should say. Las Cazuellas does a really good job of hitting that sweet spot between a "nice", "fancy" place and a "family" place and is pretty noteworthy just for that.
