MrCalifornia, I have to agree with the opinions of some of the other posters about the relative newness of Mexicans in the area, therefore, it isn't as easy to find Mexican joints on every corner as you would in parts of California, however, up in the NE, for a corner take-out, definitely try Los Panchitos. The owner is quite affable, and the food is really reasonable, tasty and fresh. Or take a drive to South Philadelphia and check out some of the other places that have been mentioned--I have taken that walk to Tacqueria Veracruzanda, yum. Or, go for the restaurant experience and go to Las Margaritas at Welsh and the Boulevard, always fun.

Yes, there is...please open one near city hall so I can go for lunch.

By the way, go to Tequilas on Locust street for a fantastic authentic Mexican meal. Not taqueria, rather a nice restaurant. My favorite restaurant in the city.

And if anyone knows where to find REAL Mexican churizo, please tell me. I've searched all over 9th St. and nada. They have churizo, but it's not the kind that kind of melts in the pan before you crack your eggs over it and then serve it with fresh tortillas....mmmm.

One other thing, the problem with the taco places here is the same problem with sandwiches out in Cali...the bread. You can't make a good cheese steak or hoagie with bread baked out west. Not enough humidity in the air to make good chewy roll. Here the problem is....STOP STEAMING THE FREAKIN TORTILLAS! They need to be heated on a grill, or at least on the burner of a stove...not steamed or microwaved. Mmmm, pasty burrito....blech!

Nah...it's still the Texans.

That's not nice!

Cause if you moved to another city, you'd be bitching about the lack of decent cheesesteaks. I should know... cause I do it now. lol

So... help him out with a suggestion on a local Mexican place or leave him be.

For a basic mom-n-pops taqueria I like La Lupe 9th and Federal in South Philly just up from Geno's. For a nice sit-down place with real authentic food (very high-quality but not "trendy") go to Las Cazuellas on Girard near 4th. Some of the best mole sauce I have ever had (including an old girlfriend's abuella's recipe).

Try the chorizo from the other meat vendor, Harry Ochs, a few down from Martin's. It's probably more along the lines of what you would expect. The andouille there is as good as I've had anywhere.

I lived in Texas for years and never had better taqueria Mexican than offered at La Lupe.

I'm starving for one of these, I'd eat at a taqueria about twice a week at least before I came here. But instead of taquerias there's pizza and hoagie shops on every corner (which are not without their own merit.) I don't need a taqueria on every corner just location of ONE good one to get my fix!

And this is why you should donate to PACCA, not PETA:

In September, PETA made headlines in Vermont and across the nation for asking
Ben & Jerry's ice cream to use human breast milk in their ice cream, instead of cow milk
