while you'd have to be mildly retarded to scoff at tex mex, I do agree acapulco's is pretty tasty. mr. C, you could drop the ca arrogance. it's just different from texas mexican food as there are many regions in mexico serving different types of mexican food just as there are different types of food popular in various places in the US. aside from acapulco's. I like la lupe's. none are as good as the mexican joints in texas I used to frequent but then again, the italian down there was sorely lacking.

I think its mildly retarded to find scoffing at texmex mildly retarded. But then again, we're all entitled to our opinions, EVEN IF that opinion comes from Texas.

I'm starving for one of these, I'd eat at a taqueria about twice a week at least before I came here. But instead of taquerias there's pizza and hoagie shops on every corner (which are not without their own merit.) I don't need a taqueria on every corner just location of ONE good one to get my fix!

Check out Las Margaritas @ Welsh and the Boulevard. (That's Route Uno)The food is great. The atmosphere is great. The service is great.

The world is funny..

In CA (granted, it was college) it was texans who were the opinionated, overly-proud of their home state A-holes..

It seems like in Philadelphia its the Californians (myself included)

The extent to which I have toned mine down is probably unnoticeable to locals..

or CA. the world wikll be a better place once it falls into the ocean. desert...I've always found CA, Texans, and New Yorkers to have this trait in common. Mr. Ca obviously has no idea what he's talking abotu if he can scoff at tex mex. nothing but narrow minded CA talk. (mildly retarded I might add). I've been here long enough I no longer consider myself a texan but I do know good food and I won't let ignorant ideas about a state's politics get in my way of good eatin'. That said, I've always felt that cal mex was a bot iff the mark but a good reflection of the state's agricultural prominence (even if it's paid for with federal irrigation dollars). mexicans in texas generally come form a different area of mexico than those in socal. texas may ave the best beef in the nation..thus their steak fajitas are phenomenal.

After weeks of gradual change, Taco Lucas reached 100% Taco Bell-ization the last time we were there. They now have yellow corn tortillas as well as white, and the white tortillas are no longer doubled up thin tortillas but extra thick (and less tasty) single tortillas. I have no luck getting them to make the tacos like they used to. You can get them with onion and cilantro, but there is often something else missing.

Maybe they are giving people what they want, if so good for them. But we have gone from weekly customers to non-customers. Now it's back to South Philly for really good tacos. Hopefully for Taco Lucas, we are the exception and they are now more successful than before.

Mr. C

I re-read your first post..

It's funny - I've been to La Lupe 3 or 4 times a week in the last month and each time I got a pierna torta, carnitas taco, and horchata.. let me know your take after you go..

I have got to get to this spot Acapulco - maybe next weekend..

Mr. C--I sympathize as I moved here from Arizona in January. I was fed up with the fact that there were Mexican joints on every corner, and came to Philly looking forward to Italian food and variety. Unfortunately, most of the Italian joints I've been to have been basically family-owned Olive Gardens and now I miss the good Mexican food.

I've been to Taqueria Veracruzana on 9th Washington, and it's pretty freakin good. I've also had the margaritas and guac at Cantina Los Cabolitos (told you guys I was there) and they were also yummy.

Mr California,

You should keep in mind(maybe you don't know this) that the Phila.
area had virtually no Mexicans 5 years ago.

The Hispanic population consisted primarily of Puerto Ricans
who've been in the area for decades.

You're used to the very large latino population in CA. It's all very
new to us here.

I would give it a bit more time wrt seeing more authentic Mexican
restaurants.

Right, this region of the country does not have a long tradition of very large Mexican communities. That's changing now, and the Italian Market area is richer for it, but it's just simple fact that this is a different part of the country with different mix of ethnicities. So you shouldn't really expect the Mexican food here to be like in California.
