Hi I am new here and still fairly new to Philly. I rented in N. Phillay and had a house full of mice and I bought a house in N. Philly (what was I thinking) that has mice and rats. Where can I move to that I don't have to deal with this? We have children and they are my number one concern. What area of the city is rodent free and has reasonably priced homes? Nice neighboorhoods without trash everywhere?
Any advice is appreciated! |

This is going to be way more expensive, but may I suggest you try somewhere by Packer and Pattison? There's a big park and playground in the area for your kids and you'll still be on the BSL so you can get to work and you'll have access to the freeways like you have in North Phila. It feels more suburban down there, though--and you'll have clogged streets with stadium traffic during events (but it's really not THAT bad).

Maybe (s)he could also try Fishtown, too. If you don't have a car or don't want to get one, you'll need to check which areas in the NE you plan are going to look for as some spots are going to be spotty with transit service (multiple bus changovers, etc).
I wouldn't recommend West Philadelphia. It's getting pricer (than where you are) and a lot of homes over there in N. Philly price ranges are in the condition you're trying to avoid. Once you've picked what hood, dig up a realtor and go to the showings and start looking carefully at the walls, the floorboards and the permiter of the houses for any signs of openings or damage from rodents and always take whatever the sales weasel tells you about the house with a grain of salt. Happy hunting! Quote:

Isn't the city suppossed to be good in regards to the rat thing?
We had a rat on our little roof. A huge rat, and it was hanging from our airconditioner. I flipped. Luckily my father was here also or everyone would have said I was outta my mind. I mean I am, but there truly was a rat. I called the vector control, and within hours two guys came out, and went up, and down the drive with a big pole looking for nests. Apparently there are rats that live on roofs. They put some contraption with poison out there, and never saw one again. Pretty much I guess if people have these, and other people don't care, and don't get exterminated you're in trouble. Sorry that is happening to you. I'd be flipping out myself. |

There are going to be rodents where ever you go, you just won't always see them. There are a number of neiborhoods that are reasonably priced, and clean. I'm of course partial to Wissinoming, there are a number of nice houses for sale right around where I am.
