Question Do you remember the Crest Theater...

Do you remember the Crest Theater? I think it was on Rising Sun Blvd. It's been along time ago. In fact I saw "Thirteen Ghosts" there also. So that would make it around 1960? I moved away from Philly to Los Angeles when my family uprooted. I was 14. My brother and me were just talking about the Crest Theater the other day. He was trying to find a picture of it on-line. Do you no if it is still standing. I sure hope so. I have a lot of fond memories of that place.....

Of course the Midway, saw "The Mark of the Devil" there and as a marketing gimic (because it was supposed to be such a gross out) they handed out vomit bags with your ticket! We used to go to the Mayfair and the Castor - saw "The Sound of Music" at the Castor. Oh well, those were the days!
It would be great to see the Mayfair someday become a theater again, but it seems that more and more people are going to the movies less and less. The cost can be prohibitive, especially if you're taking a family. And now they have not only video stores, on-line mail order video stores and on demand - but the first run films are also going to release the video of the films on the same day.
Nothing can replace the experience of a great film on a large screen in a theatre though.

How about the Castor and the Benner? I think they've both been closed for some time now, right?

Default Creat Movie Theater

The Crest Movie was demolished many years ago. A 7-11 store now occupies a large portion of the former site. The long ramp running along the back of the theater was filled in. It was located at Rising Sun and Cheltenham Ave across the street from the Franklin Elementary School. I remember those great Saturday matinees with those corny giveaways. It was a great experience going there as a young boy. It was made of tan bricks and positioned between a cleaners and Ring’s drugstore.

Wow. I live in Missouri but grew up in Philly. Left in 74, joined the Navy and escaped. I lived all over Philly in my youth, East Falls, North Philly, Roxborough and the 3 years before I left, Frankford (right behind North Catholic)

I remember the Mayfair theatre well. I used to go roller skating at the skating place just down Frankford Ave on Saturday afternoons for like 2 years. I had a number of girlfriends that I met there and we always went to the Mayfair on our dates.

I just found this site and it is a real trip down memory lane. My recollections of the Mayfair area are in stark contrast to East Falls, 29th & Alleghney and Abbotsford Homes projects. Even to the area in Frankford I lived. Going to Mayfair to see girlfriends was an escape. I dated a girl for a long time who lived on Friendship St, a few blocks down from Frankford and a couple of girls who lived on, hmm, Brighton?, a few blocks down from Frankford.

I spent quite a bit of time in Mayfair. Some one mentioned the old theatre at K&A as well. I have many memories of that theatre as my grand parents lived off of Frankford and Alleghney, near Mastbaun. That was a grand movie house. I remember the barf bag thingy someone mentioned as a stunt.

I am in Missouri now and when my kids ask what it was like where I grew up, how does one explain all the cultural nuances unique to Philadelphia, a city of many cities?

Anyway, I am rambling, so I will get back to reading this teriffic blog!

Feel free to private me or hit me up on AIM sometime, would love to talk to some people from home.

David

Default Mizzarah....

Hey David, what part of Missouri do you live in. I'm up in the Ozarks, in a little town called Viburnum. Rolla is not to far from me. Maybe 50 miles. I'm about 100 miles out of St. Louis...does that ring a bell. And I know what you mean about memory lane. I jump up when I hear I have an e-mail. Hoping its Phillyblog ringing.

Is a medical complex. The Torresdale, which was at Benner/Torresdale is the auto-repair shop and has been for at least 30 years.
