Too often times we presume that certain things aren't sacred when we can easily poke fun at them, or brutally trample them underfoot and totally render them a thing of the past, which the Fox Chase Cancer Center is so eager to do with Burholme Park.
But Burholme Park IS sacred in that if it becomes lost, the communities around it will lose all ability to become their absolute best, which let it be said they have every Godgiven right to aspire to, just as is true of Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill, where the Fox Chase Cancer Center's head, Dr. Young, resides. At this moment in time, the vast majority of those who reside around Burholme Park can be summarized as being far from sacred. But this doesn't change the fact that Burholme Park itself very much is. And Burholme Park isn't just sacred in the abstract sense, but it holds this status with scientific bearing as well. Among certain things of scientific importance, it serves as a vital watershed for that entire region. And it provides enough in terms of open green space to prevent the communities right around it from becoming complete ghettoes. And it could serve these vital roles even moreso if its size were expanded upon even further, rather than reduced in size, which is what the Fox Chase Cancer Center, either in its ignorance or its deliberation, is seeking. Many can argue that treating cancer and providing good-paying jobs are sacred as well. And I'm not arguing against that. But just as it's true that Satan cannot cast out Satan, can we somehow suggest that that which is sacred can realistically cast out that which is sacred? For it is that that I keep coming back to, and what disturbed me most when I first heard the Fox Chase Cancer Center's expansion proposal back in 2004. Satan can cast out that which is sacred, and that which is sacred can cast out that which is Satanic, but I cannot conceive of any case where that which is sacred can cast out that which is equally so. Meaning that one of the two has to be other than this, though it may be made to look to be as if "sacred." I know that in my case I got in touch with the Fox Chase Cancer Center immediately after I first heard the announcement. And they were very nice and polite to me at first. But the moment I began asking them perfectly legitimate questions about the possible traffic problems their expansion at that location would cause, they turned nasty on me in a hurry. I wasn't trying to belittle them in any way, for at such moment I had every reason to believe they were totally well-meaning. But when they reacted to my innocent question so harshly, and so abruptly, I was fully taken aback. And I knew in that moment which of the two -- Burholme Park and the Fox Chase Cancer Center -- was far from sacred. Rather than my having to second guess at this any longer they made it totally clear to me. They didn't even try to pretend with me following that. Rather, their attitude was, "Well, we'll just keep making our case to those who aren't as astute as you are." Last edited by GetRichTryin : 03-29-2006 at 05:13 AM. |

Clearly if you are AGAINST the Fox Chase Cancer Center, that means you are FOR cancer. And I can't support anyone who is FOR Cancer. Cancer lover! Furthermore, if Burholme park is against the Fox Chase Cancer Center then it too must be pro-cancer....and if Burholme Park is pro-cancer then all parks are probably pro-cancer. I say lets pave over all the parks and turn them all into Cancer centers! That'll teach those damn parks and their smelly trees and grasses.
Also, I hate that giant golf ball at the driving range....that thing has been taunting me for decades....it probably likes cancer too.

I respect your opinion, but totally disagree with you at the same time. Here is a link to Fox Chase's website detailing the expansion project. I suggest you read this throughly and become well informed prior to jumping on a soap box. However, the battle is over... the project has been approved and is moving forward. Sorry.
http://www.fccc.edu/news/expansion/ Tim K, I too can't stand that giant golf ball. I'm tempted to go to the range for the sole purpose of trying to drive all my balls into that thing! |
