Newsworthy but annoying and probably do more harm than good. A big protest at the FTC that didn't interrupt law abiding citizens using public transporation would be better. How about something that interrupts criminals, but in a safe way?

Whoever these ward leaders nominate will surely be Rick Mariano's replacement.
I read there were 3 possible candidates: Maria Quoneez Sanchez (sp?), Kathleen Fitzpatrick and a guy from Castor Gardens.
Hell maybe someone here should run for the seat in 07'. The power of a internet powered campaign increases everyday.

I think if you have a large enough crowd on the sidewalk of the FTC protesting anything it will get noticed. Your right in that if a protest tied up traffic in the area it would lead to an even more negative image of the area and it's residents.

What would happen if homeowners and renters in Frankford finally decided that they had enough of this BS, and swept out any politician that opposed them?

What if one thousand people wrote their councilmen, including the "At-Large" ones, expressing their opposition to letting their community be used as some kind of guinea pig to test the effectiveness of a program that potentially could negatively affect their safety and their public health?

What would happen if one thousand residents piled into one of those "Future of Frankford" meetings and took control of the agenda, rather than letting a handful of insiders set the direction for us? WHAT COULD THEY DO TO STOP US?

NOTHING.

We have only ourselves to blame. We need to get together with civig groups, church groups and influential residents and put our heads together to take back Frankford. And we need to COMMIT to sticking with it, no matter how rough the going gets--and it WILL get rough.

Or we could all sell out homes and mortgage ourselves to the breaking point, buying into other communities where the property values have soared well beyond the rate of appreciation we have seen in Frankford. And Frankford will become the destination for the unemployed, the morons that can't live among normal people without first receiving counseling, the Section 8 and other types of slumlords, and the drug dealers that take over our streets. And the only noteworthy industry in Frankford will be Social Services, because the tipping point will have been long passed, and decent people will not sink their hard-earned money into a community that is not safe.

Those are our choices. Other communities have been in the same boat, and have risen to the challenges. Just look at some of the neighborhoods in the 5 boroughs of New York that once were infested with vermin and now command top dollar.

If we could just get the ball rolling, and keep up the effort, it would snowball to the point that we could see some REAL change for the better--and we wouldn't need any federal or state dollars bankrolling us, we would not be indebted to politicians (THEY would be indebted to US!) and we could do in Frankford what the majority of communities in America do--create an environment where people can live and, possibly, work in an environment that is conducive to families, not one that caters to thugs.

But the first thing we have to do is to shake off the attitude that everyone here is either a recovering addict, or a welfare recipient that must be coddled. There are lots of good people here--they just need to be prodded to awaken from their slumber and to become informed.

So how do we get started? Or do we just keep bitching . . . ?

Thank You.

Well, if I still lived in the 7th District, I would be doing the following: I would be on the phone and the internet to each and every civic association in the 7th District and calling for a meeting of the heads of the civics. Kensington, Juniata, Northwood, Frankford, Oxford Circle, Castor Gardens, Rhawnhurst, etc. Sit down with these people and come up with a candidate to replace Councilman Mariano. Come to an agreement...and then push that candidate with everything ya got. (Remember: It's the ward leaders and the Democratic leadership in the city who will decide who gets nominated to replace Mariano. )Once a candidate is decided upon among the group, call a press conference with each local paper to announce your candidate. Each civic could send out a flyer to their neighborhood pushing their candidate. Tell the people that this is who the community wants to lead them until the next general election. Someone who is honest, respected, available, and knowledgable about the neighborhoods in the 7th. Protests aren't going to work. The wardleaders couldn't care less about protests. They care about VOTES. The civics in the 7th have a unique opportunity to change the leadership in the 7th. But they should be working at it NOW. It's called "grassroots".

Here's my problem with street protests, despite their good intentions. First, they're usually held during a work day and as I watch the news that evening I say to myself, don't any of those protestors have a job to go to? Second, do you really think you're going to get any sympathy by blocking a major intersection like Frankford and Bridge? Unlike many of the protestors, most of us have jobs we need to get to and from. Do not make it any more difficult for me. Like someone said earlier, disrupt the lives of those you're protesting against. Third, my perception is that it's probably the children of the protestors who are committing alot of the crime. Take care of your own house first (note: this point is not directed against anyone on this thread).

Default Great Ideas!

All great ideas! Now to get to taking some action!
1. We need to know who the candidate for the 7th District will be, many are hoping it's Kathleen Fitzpatrick. Once we know, we can do as Resident of NW suggests and each one start telephone and internet campaign. Phillyblog is a great assett too.
2. The protesting idea still seems like a good one. It would be great if we could use costumes or prison-like uniforms - Yes, protests tend to cause a lot of flurry and scurry, but they do call media attention.
I don't think it should interupt commuter traffic - and a Saturday would probably get more people to join us.
This protest would show that we are just "FED UP WITH FRANKFORD BEING NEGLECTED AND BEING EATEN ALIVE BY CRIME, MURDER, DRUGS, PROSTITUTION, - ALL OF THE SH$# THAT WE PUT UP WITH EVERY DAY - WE'RE SICK OF IT! NO MORE!"
3. I love the idea of the billboard, but $$$$ is a problem and ACE doesn't want to deal with scabby ads or hairy backs!
4. We should show up en masse at a "Future of Frankford" meeting and make it known that these "community meetings" does not speak for everyone in the community and that these decisions that affect the community should not be made by just a few chosen by their clique!
ALL RIGHT, LET'S SEE WHO THE CANDIDATE WILL BE. LET'S TALK ABOUT A PROTEST FOR MAY OR JUNE - ON A SATURDAY? AND LET'S GEAR UP FOR A TELEPHONE AND INTERNET CAMPAIGN!
