Homegirl, you know, we thought that was who it was,(Oliveto) some of the meetings over the past year or two there have been discussions about the new restaurant, Mozaics? But, most people thought it was the guy whose buying a lot of the buildings around there, they have a development company too, Mantris Development Corporation? We didn't know they had a catering company until the article. Just forgot the connection, now it makes sense. They've had tables and food at the Arts Festival serving samples of what's going to be on the menu. It's been a couple of years coming. Any idea when the restaurant is opening? I know at Future's meeting it's brought up once in a while, but there doesn't seem to be a clear cut time or if it's still going to happen. Seems the value in the buildings are more in the rental income having it as apartments. They've been able to advertise it as artists lofts and talked about trying for grants to bring these types as residents. Frankford could use a good restaurant, they used to have quite a few Diners and little restaurants, but they've all been gone for a long time. The only place to sit down and eat on Frankford Avenue is Leandro's and the last guy who owned it, sold it about a year or two ago to a Russian guy who's still running it. The original relative of the original Leandro's is still making the pizzas, but he basically just stays every time it changes hands, he's a nice guy, Mario. Doesn't talk much. So, it's basically the same pizza, but it's been sold a few times. I think the value of the building is more in the rental income of the boarding rooms in the building than the business. Oh, there was an International Buffet, it wasn't open very long. They put a lot into the property. It was really bright and clean, but just didn't make it. Now it's a seafood place, still bright and clean, food is pretty good and it's reasonable. It's not some place I'd recommend someone go out of their way to visit, but for the neighborhood, it offers something nice, bright, clean and reasonable. Definately not a Paloma ;-), not a Book and the Cook entry, but for Frankford Avenue, it's offering something decent to the residents. |

From what I understand Mozaic will be opening in time for the festival in May and the only involvement with Mantis Development is landlord/tenant. There is no "they". She (Oliveto) is doing this on her own. No grants. Her involvement with the catering events was only limited to volunteering. |
