Alright. My kid, and her friends every once in awhile get on their dad's who hail from Mayfair about their hair.
How does this happen? Does it ever change? Why don't guys in Tacony have this hair? It all started I guess back when all the boys stuck those combs in those high tube socks. This is a form of a mullett, but the new version still has the wing thing going on slightly, and the back longer of course, but not mullett length. Any theories? Why the middle part? I guess you'd be in the range of say 35-50. Please if you have an answer bring it on. All these men say is "I like it this way". My one brother has moved on up, but even under his mailman hat the Mayfair cut shines through. Take that Abington. |

![]() ![]() I'm not from Mayfair, but I know some people in that age range who are. Sure enough, they still have this hair style. I have a theory: many guys who live in the neighborhood have been going to the same barber for years. Heck, I know people that moved out of mayfair 10 years ago, and still return for hair cuts. They refuse to go to anybody else. Since they are on a first name basis with the barber, there is no exchange that needs to take place, in terms of describing the style. They just say, "give me the usual". Its quick, easy, and all their friends have the same haircut, so they fit in. My father grew-up in Brooklyn in the 1950's and '60s. To this day he still has the wind-tunnel tested bufonte-do. Guys aren't like women, where they have a big conversation with their hair stylest about trying something new. At least working-class guys don't. Malloy, is that hair style really prevelent in Philly? I thought the Carmine Gotti look was localized to the NY Metropolitan area. I know the haircut, but can't say I've seen anyone sporting that kind of thing since, well, the 80's, thank God. My mother took me to a barber down on Frankford Avenue, near Somerset Street, as a kid. I was started out with a traditional men's haircut, AKA, a "JFK haircut," and have had it ever since, expect for the time I spent with Uncle Sam -- then I either had it buzzed or a very, very short JFK haircut.

D-Man knows EXACTLY what I was talking about. That's the hair. Again, there's a kinder, gentler version for the man approaching 50, but it's the same mold all the same.
Malloy, stop posting pics of those young men I've been dating. They've used up all my hair products. Thanks for the laugh. I mean that's all hilarious. Poor Scoop. You best not go to Somerset for a cut this year. Then again I always hear about this place called "KIM'S". Seems to be the place down the way for a good tape? MC, keep your eyes peeled. You WILL see that hair. It's out there in abundance. I suggest these fellows at some point just plain out tell their barber I need a change. Although alot of guys I know still go to Frank over on Battersby Street, and in no exaggeration Frank is at LEAST 85. Note of caution for Mayfair Chick, and Driveway Mom. These hair cuts are often topped off by a baseball cap. Not because of love of a team or to shield from the sun. Just to hide a great big bald spot. Boys embrace it. Bald can be beautiful. Too funny. More pics so I can laugh when I get home please. |

I haven't had my hair cut on Frankford near Somerset since 1968. I haven't had my hair cut in Kensington or Port Richmond since 1979. These days I travel a few miles from my house and visit this old barber on Linden Avenue, just west of Frankford. His name escapes me right now, but his daughter has a beauty shop, "Michele's," right next door.

Malloy,
I do believe those guys are sporting the "Gotti" hair. Ha ha! They probably get their eyebrows waxed more than I do. Yikes!

What really perplexes me when I visit the Northeast is that the WOMEN still have mullets! They're usually seen with the daily uniform of sweatpants and a sweatshirt. |
